Just spent the last hour + catching up on 30 + pages. I am whooped. Some of you are talking about spring...some of you are buried in feet of snow. I am out of town, but I hear we only got rain and wind in Milan. DW says the coop/run area is under water. : ( With as wet as it has been last year and this winter, I am expecting a bumper crop of mosquitoes again this year. Do any of you have bat boxes in or near your yard? How do the bats work for you as natural mosquito control? Do you have plans or links to plans that I could build a bat box? Thanks.

Welcome Juise. Let us know how it goes for you w/ your Destiny Farms chickens. I can't comment on chicken quarrantine, because I don't even have chickens yet, but lots of others on the forum seem to be full of wisdom covering such topics!

Well, I would think at the rate I am going and at the rate you've been going, Opa, it will probably take me a lot less time to reach 7500 posts. LOL. HOWEVER, that is not 7500 posts on this thread. SO, I could feasibly be top chick this year yet. LOL. BUT, as I said, as soon as planting season starts, I am going to be one busy girl. I have plans, and I hope they are not going to be more than I can handle.

I am now seriously considering Sebastapols, and it really is Olives fault for telling me that they'd be happy in kiddie pools. LOL. Maybe I will just buy a stuffed toy that looks like a sabastapol. Hehehee. It will never get sick, dirty, poop everywhere making duck and chicken poo look like nothing in comparrison.

I kept Sugar-pie in for the night yet. I took her out of the fish tank and let her poop wander all over the counter. She is still moving slow. I am not sure she'd be up for jumping up on the roosts yet, or maybe I am just paranoid that she'll not be kept warm enough if she's left by herself on the floor. She is a lot better...
after attack and rescue

Tonight...

I gave her towels over the wood chips because her tummy was quite tender and bruised from the rotten dogs using her as a chewy.

I am trying not to strain myself here.

We use kiddie pools for all of our ducks and geese. We will more than likely have sebastopols for sale at Chickenstock. Another person you might be interested in is Cottage Rose. She raises very pretty birds and alot of our flock come from her and Holderread. We will more than likely be hatching whites, splashes, buffs, grays, and lavenders. We got our lavender pair from Cottage Rose along with the splash gander.

I'm planning on building a bat house or two myself, whenever my 4 y/o and I manage to finish the bird houses we started a couple weeks ago.

We have a lot of mosquitoes around here. This is the site I have bookmarked to use, they have a couple really nicely done plans for free on this page, and a link to another site with 20 more free bat house plans.

muttsfan - maybe we can save you some snow for when you come home. It turns out it was more like 20 inches.

teeville - I was going to ask about Mr. Peanut if you found him. I guess not. He was a handsome little guy.

Welcome Juise and was there some one else I missed?

Grandma - your chicken story was great. I am very attached to all my animals and it bothers me so much when something happens to them. But the truth is I wouldn't want it any other way. You can tell so much about a person from how they treat their animals, whether pet or farm.

Nova - your little injured chick is so cute, I'm glad she's ok now.

Spent the day shoveling, and shoveling, and yet more shoveling and you can't really tell. The chickens weren't too happy to be stuck in the coop all day, but I didn't have the energy to clean them a spot in their yard. Maybe the snow will melt this week before I have to shovel it. I gave them more apples and suet to help with the boredom. They did give me 22 egg today so maybe being penned up did them some good. DH is not home yet from work. Nothing like a 12+ hour day in a plow truck, I'm sure he will be lots of fun to be around this evening, maybe he'll just fall asleep!

Our TSC has not opened yet. However I won't be allowed near it when it does have chick days. I said I wouldn't after filling the incubator.

I am using a step 2/little tykes tug boat for the ducks right now. They don't like when I draining though. It scares the crap out of them and they run for the enclosure.

No, we didn't find him. I looked all over, but there are no signs of him or any feathers to indicate anything happened to him. He's just gone.

It's just too weirdly quiet around here now without our faithful watch-bird.

Thanks Juise. I am checking them out now...I am sure mosquito season is just around the corner. Do you happen to know when I should shoot to put the box out? April? May? June?
