Yay, mid-term exam is finally done. Only 13 hours to do 4 problems and double check one of them. If I don't pass this test, I don't know what I'll do.

Now I just have to catch up on 3 weeks of GIS mapping. Somebody shoot me.

Oh it would be so helpful if they were in a coop, but they stay on the pond I would need to be aquaman to get them to go into a coop. They roost on the edge of the pond, and it seems someone is always a watchman awake. No way to force them anywhere.

The Pekins I had last year were like that. They would have splash fights in the middle of the night in my pond which is right under my bedroom window. A few times the splashes came through the window, 3 1/2 feet above the pond.

I wonder what these mallards will be like when they go outside.

Wow, you sure did! I didn't know that about the olive oil. As a side bonus, did you know that lethicin is supposed to help you lose weight? My sis really wants to try it, so let me know if anything happens! :) I am rooting for you to get better, or at least find a way to go in if you have to. I wish i could do more to help you.

oops! I thought you guys meant NEXT TUESDAY. Sorry grandma, spacey moment. Should've read that a little better. You guys will have to tell all when you get back! I'm dying to know what the experts are up to.Btw, that site is well presented, i really like the term "functional medicine". I am always stuck for a simple explanation when i try to explain to my friends, especially part about looking for the root of the problem and how a bunch of different stuff all works together.

(I really was trying to not post any more this day, really i promise!)

I think at only a few days they are ready for a supervised soak. When my ducklings were three days old, I introduced them to a pan of water and they all immediately hopped in and had a blast. So a little bit of warm water in a bathtub gives them more space to splash around in. I just don't leave them alone, make sure they can get out, and end bath time before they get too waterlogged. I just love a bathing ducky though. They bob, dunk, and dive, shake their tiny wingies and booties, just so adorable!

They are a week old today, maybe I'll give it a try tomorrow. Maybe I should bathe the dogs too. The bathtub needs to be cleaned anyway and that just might be the motivation to clean and re-caulk.

Got up this morning and discovered that I have a pulse. It appears that God has once again taken care of the important requirement for a good day so now the rest of it is up to me. I feel bad for the people who can't understand that the primary requirement for having a good day is attitude. While today is still a little on the brisk side it still is going to be a wonderful day and the next week it is going to be nothing short of glorious. Temperatures in the upper 40s and 50s, how could we want more.

It might help my morning attitude if I could wake up to a cup of coffee big enough to jump into every morning, that looks good!

I think I'm developing age-onset ADD. I can't seem to get focused on completing this blasted mid-term. I only have 4 problems left to do but each one takes about 4 hours to do. I need to focus...right after I check the coop...then check the chicks...then water the plants...then check BYC...then...I forget. What was I talking about?

Hmm... I have to problem all the time. I had barely started to tell my husband today that I think we should start making our own soap before he started to glaze over. I guess I have a few too many projects going.

Thanks Juise. I am checking them out now...I am sure mosquito season is just around the corner. Do you happen to know when I should shoot to put the box out? April? May? June?

I believe, if I can remember correctly, that early Spring is best, but if you get it up before mid-Summer you still have a good chance of attracting bats this year. Make sure that it faces South if possible, or South East I think is the next best facing. You also should paint it dark on the outside, and some places say the inside as well.

It is still lightly snowing here at the mid pinky of our mitten state. I ran out of bird food for the wild ones so I decided to share some of the chickens scratch with them. Tractor's chick days Ads need to have a disclaimer on them that reads "Enter at your own risk" or "Chicken Math may take effect" .

I must resist. Eggs being donated to DD's school for incubating in class.

LOL. It also doesn't help when they hand your 4 year old a duckling to cuddle, just because she was looking at them.

So Chicken Grandma what you are saying is you don't eat your chickens? Right? I don't want to eat my chickens just the eggs the family think I am nuts

Kimmie

We don't eat ours.

We were vegan up until our chickens started laying, I still have trouble sometimes eating the eggs.

OK, all you McGuyver fans, thought you would find this interesting:
While brooding on her nest, an endangered (can' remember what kind) bird accidentally cracked one of her eggs. the workers quickly went to work, "fixing the egg with tape and glue". The egg stabalized, and the chick hatched out fine....
So they didn't specify what kinds of tape and glue, but i'm thinking medical tape and elmers? I searched it on here and some have tried melted wax too, although i would worry about the heat...?
Just thought that was kinda neat!

Wax has a pretty low melting point, so it doesn't have to be terribly warm to be pliable. I would just make sure if you try Elmers not to use water soluble, like their school glue.

How many backyard chicken keepers does it take to figure out the imperial measurement system?

Depends on whether you feed regular protein feed, or high protein gamebird formula. You just have to watch not to give too much protein or salt to avoid gout. Laying feed is supposed to be bad for roos too. I fed mine tuna and salmon once a week through winter and i didn't have any problems. I have heard of people mixing cod liver oil in the feed for the omegas, but i wonder if it makes the eggs taste funny?

I don't know, but I know my Dad told me that all the eggs he had in Japan always tasted like fish. He always wondered if they just used the same pan, or what, until I told him why we don't feed our chickens onions or garlic. Although I still think there's gotta be a market for garlic onion eggs.

Ugh, I have a sinus infection. *hate* It had better be gone before the nicer weather moves in, I have things I want to do in the sunshine!

All caught up and really enjoyed seeing the naked chicken (that reminds me of a song).

We eat meaties that we grow each summer and any overflow of roos that come through but some of the girls that have been around for years, not yet.

Ducks are messy but still a lot of fun and those perma smiles they have just melt my heart.

Middle of the night, unable to sleep, I can hear a couple of the roos sounding off in the coop all muffled and snug. Probably a cat prowling by needed a warning to stay away. It is such a lonely sound for sure.

I am all for alternative healing with just one word of caution. Just like drugs can interact with one another and cause more problems than they can help, herbs and suppliments have the potential to interact as well. Please do your research from a couple of reputable sites (sites not trying to sell you something.} Best wishes to those suffering ailments. I self medicate with cinnamon capsules (blood sugar) and B complex stress tabs(energy), calcium, vit D, (bone loss) probiotics(acid reflux, ibs) and eat salmon weekly (cause I like it).

Guess I'll sign off now.
