Can you believe this weather? I am so excited to see the sun again! Sooo we finally got our chickens on the 4th and 6th of this month. A healthy mix of NH red, barred rocks, leghorns, silver wyandottes, black stars and hopefully a few Isa's. We got 80 and have been lucky that we haven't lost any yet. I think I'm addicted. I could probably spend my whole day watching them and their crazy antics. I also can't believe how fast they grow! The first batch has almost tripled in size and are feathering out like crazy. I do have a few questions for those of you who have gone before me. The first batch is a straight run. What do you do with the extra cockerels? I kinda want to keep them to butcher when they're ready, but I know they can be slow growing. Do I just separate them some how? How do I prevent fighting? Or is it better to try to sell them off asap? Also, can anyone tell me who we can sell our birds to? Is it just private citizens or can we sell to grocery stores, hotels and such? I found the exemption for not having to be inspected but I have been unable to find who we can sell to. Also does the bird have to be alive when the transaction is done? I appreciate any info you can offer up. My brain is shot from trying to decipher the cryptic wording of chicken laws. Thanks!

Farmgirl 09 - I hope Olive Hill will reply to your post because she is very informed about farming for profit. Your roosters will not fight for about 4-6month so you don't have to worry about them yet and if it were me, I would just eat them when they started to fight.

I got to meet Robin!! Ohmigosh her lambs are soooo cute! If we had more land I am sure that two of them would have made it home with me. Down 2 roos up 25 hatching eggs lol!

Well there is always next year lol. Maybe you can find a place before then.
I had a lovely time. It sure was nice meeting you and my handsome Rooster Dan is the most beautiful bird I have ever seen. 100 thank you's for him and Big Boy.

Leaving now to go meet Ferret and give them the Uggo roos. Was quite comical watching the roos outsmart my daughter and husband!

I have two roos that are a year old and don't fight. If they ever do I'll use Chicken Grandma's advise and send one to freezer camp unless I can rehome one. As far as straight run, well good luck deciphering what's what. My two BR roos looked like hens for a long time, I even had our local chicken expert look at them and tell me they were hens! Ha ha, I think it was when they started crowing I sorta knew for sure. Even then I told my wife sometimes a hen will crow if she's boss but that was just wishfull thinking.

Sorry haven't been around....just haven't had much of a chance to drop by. Here are some pics of my little new ones...I have some 3 weeks olds, and 2, 5 day olds. Also, so pictures of my niece (she is a chicken obessed child) She was trying to get them to play with her.
