Why did you take her babies away? I had 2 broodies hatch in winter, and they did just fine. kept them closed off from the others, with food and water and a 75 watt red light over the chick water to keep it liquid... Well anyway. I'd be pi$$y too if my babies got taken away after 3 weeks of sitting still... lol

Yayee! Chickies!

My broody hen's eggs finally hatched! She has two cute lil' poofy silkies. A white and a black(?). The black is a tiny little thing cause it came out of a pullet egg. I brought them inside and put her back in with the rest of the birds. She wasn't happy and took it out on one of the white roosters lol. Going to candle my eggs tonight and will candle the shipped-in-eggs on Friday.

Yaaa Congrats Jen. Beautiful babies.

I was thinking of the Safeguard... but was not sure. I will be hitting FFH on my way home tomorrow to pick up ivermectin,(SP?). Does it come in a paste? I have some old, well they are new, diabetic syringes from my dad still... So I could do liquid too... I think I coud get the paste down her better though.

OMG! Think I could get a few one day olds and shove them under Leila? That way, she EATS! Maybe I will do that when I candle on next wednesday to see how those silkies she is on are developing. If nothing going, then she's getting a few bantam babies from FFH.

I am really tempted to take another sample back to have Bader check it. I don't know. I just didn't feel like the girl who did it was competent on what is acceptable or not for a chicken... I JUST KNOW THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG! She was still losing weight before she went broody. I think I had said that though... that she was still to skinny after her babies hatched and she started coming out of the broody coop. Skeeter is completely opposite. She's put the weight back on already. Leila hasn't. So... worms in general.

On another note... Check out this ad...

This is one messed up ad..

Nova, if the girl who did the fecal check did not name the parasite and tell you what medicine to give to cure it - then I would take a sample back to Dr. Bader and ask that it be done right. Because the purpose of a fecal check is to know what parasites you have and the vet will always tell you what to use to get rid of the parasite and usually suggest you treat the whole flock. That is a pretty good bargain in treating a chicken flock.

Also, most people with birds don't let them hatch clutch after clutch. I had finches and I had to limit the number of times I allowed them to hatch or I would have killed my parent finches. It takes too much out of birds to raise that many young. So even though you want the chicks that MIGHT be under Leila, you could lose Leila.

Alright ladies and gents, how do I post a pic? I have them uploaded to the default album, but I don't know how to get from the album to a post.
