Sarah- your bsl is a pullet. If it were a roo it would be colored more like a barred rock. As for the slw, I think the 1st is a boy and the 2nd a girl.

M.sue- sorry about your orp.

Straw does not absorb moisture as well as kiln-dried pine shavings.
I had good luck combining a couple bales of pines shavings with a few hay bales in the coop for the winter. It was maybe a foot deep when fluffed. I also put a couple of scoops of PDZ in the coop.
The hens seemed to prefer the hay for making their nests.

What is PDZ?

My Nankin hen is broody again and now sitting on two Nankin eggs. :

Regarding dropping dead at a year old with swollen vent. I have lost one isa to egg periotinitis (sp?) Which is a internally broken egg that gets infected. The girl was just fine the day before, eating and drinking and foraging with her mates then face first in the bedding on the coop floor in the morning. Just a thought.

Great chick pics and love the bunny babbies. can you say AAWWW.

M.Sue sorry to hear about your hen. Its worse when you don't have an answer and its unexpected.

Now that its not whine-less wednesday...

I am heading out the door to take my daughter to Providence Hospital. She is scheduled for a colonoscopy this morning. Have NO idea where I am going or how long it takes to get there..or the condition of Southfield Freeway..
We should be back by noon. She cant wait to eat food. Couldnt have anything but broth all day yesterday. And apple juice. Makes for a crabby sixteen year old. Day before yesterday, they said no fruits or vegetables. Well, she is vegetarian for the most part so that made meals pretty much nothing, as well.

Everyone have a good day. It feels like winter has returned.

Yep, it's going to be a good day. A very simple test can tell you immediately whether you coming day is going to be good or not. Place the tips of two fingers just below your wrist of the opposite hand. If there isn't a pulse then your day isn't going to be very good. However, if there is then the hard part is taken care of and everything else you can handle.

Ok, I think I got it. Here is a pic of the FCBM roo. His comb looks kinda funny because the woman that I got him from just left him out to fend for himself this winter....coyote bait basically.....comb , wattles and feet were frostbitten.....his wattles and feet made a full recovery, but lost half of his comb.

Oh stink....now why did that show up like that and not just a pic? Ugh! Back to the drawing board. I just hate it when the computer outsmarts me.
