Lost the tops of two pine trees and the lilac looks like she is a goner too. Way to much ice weighing things down here.
What kind of pines? Losing the top isn't the end of the tree, you can start a new leader for them.

Lilacs? IMO they are weeds.

White pines, and I tend to agree about the lilac. While I do enjoy the scent in the Spring they are around for such a short time and then you just have an ugly bush to mow around.

Can you reach the top where it is broken? If so, climb up and make a clean cut if the leader needs it. Then find the next lower branch that is good and healthy (robust) and use some jute twine to gently reposition it from horizontal to vertical (or as near vertical as you can move it without breaking it). By the end of the growing season, the new branch will take over as the new leader. The jute twine will rot away.

I hope you don't mind the unsolicited advice.

Oh no you didn't.

LOL I agree... my daughter (well, my mom and my daughter) bought me a lilac bush 3 years ago and this year is the first year since we planted it that I'm going to have flowers!!! I swear if the weather kills the buds I'll...I'll....well...I'll do something!!! LOL
