RaZ - I don't know if I would email your brother.
I would tell your mom that if your brother wants to communicate with you then he can have your mail address.
As a student of counseling, I suspect the reason you are hesitating to write is that your mom is telling you second hand, that your brother wants to talk to you.
And you don't know if that is true.
Now if you wanted to contact your brother then you could ask for his email address and email him.
And if he wanted to contact you, he could ask for your email address and contact you.
But the fact that your mom is telling you that he wants to be in contact and giving you his email address is kind of convoluted.......it's dysfunctional.......so I think that is the reason you are hesitating because at your gut level you are wondering what is going on. Is this your mom's idea or your brother's idea?
So I would go back to your mom and tell her to pass your email address to your brother so that he can contact you in a direct way if he chooses to do so.

My hypothesis is that hours of light are not the control factor for egg laying. There is a lot of published literature to support the 15-16 hours of light required for egg production, but all those studies focus on commercial operations.

Lots of people will state the 15-16 hours as necessary for backyard flocks as well. Since I am contrary by nature, I'm attempting to refute that "fact".

Dr. Karcher at M.S.U. told us 14 hours. Maybe you will find that to be correct in your research. He did not quote a source for us but he would respond to your email if you wanted to ask him.

babigyrl22 My frizzle has taken up her sister's role and instead of cuddling in the corner of the coop, stuffed herself in the nest box with her to sleep.
I think that's cute. Mabie you will be lucky and she will brood with her! Then you could split up the chicks.

I like doing bas relief carving and use oil paint to "wash" a hint of color into the wood. .
That's very nice Opa. You truly are a man of many talents.

I stayed busy today! My two projects of the day. Diaper bag for my SIL's shower and the beginnings of my chicken coop/tractor.

I received an email today, the waiting list for eggs I have been on for a long time

Very nice! What eggs are you getting?

Babygirl,
Thank-you for your suggestions. I never thought of using a mirror, I'll have to try that. It might be a noisy night. I had to take the 4 week old chick back out, she started picking on the little one.
Elliemae, what about getting a chick from the farm store to keep the little one company? I plan on doing that if needed as I only have 3 eggs left in the incubator for the Easter Hatch.

I had to get a post office approved box to ship it in. I ordered the box from a company in Missouri and it was shipped broken down flat. On the sides of the box it reads "Live Birds." When the post lady delivered it she remarked to Hope "that must be a really thin bird."

This morning I will take Granny for her semi-annual checkup with the doctor. She has been quite fortunate with how her health as improved since moving here. She once told me that she wanted to live till at least 103 and given her current state of health I wouldn't be surprised if she does.

That's funny Opa

I hope all goes well with Granny's check-up.

Hi all. Located in NW Michigan, about an hour south of Traverse. Anyone near me?
Hi
frow.gif
& welcome to this chatty thread.

Good Morning from Perry! I am very new to the site and was told about the Michigan thread last night. I raise Silver Ameraucanas. Just yesterday I picked up Black Copper Maran eggs. I really hope they hatch. Once everyone hatches I'll have to retest my flock for pullorum, better to be safe then sorry.

If anyone has a listing of the shows and dates could you send me the information? When my husband does not have a show of his own (his hobby), I would like to get out with my birds (my hobby).
Hi

& welcome.

The small animal swap meets in Newaygo are in the parking lot of Family Farm and Home. April14, May12, June 9, July 14, Aug 11, Sep 8, and Oct 13. I think they also started having one at the FFH in Muskegon too, possibly the first Sat of the month. But I can't be positive on that one.

hello out there from shoomy... what and where is chickenstock

frow.gif
Hi and welcome!

Welcome all to our circle of friends. The number of folks on this thread continues to grow as does our annual Chickenstock. This is our 4th and each one has been better than the last. I hope you can fix it into your schedules. It is a great opportunities to spend time with people who won't look at you funny when you talk about having or wanting chickens. It's nice to be able to put a face to the names of the folks you've come to know through the thread. Will Rogers once said that he'd never met a person that he didn't want to like and everyone comes to Chickenstock with that attitude. You'll be hard pressed to find a friendlier bunch of people.

As the number of attendees has grown so has the variety of foods of our potluck lunch and if you go away hungry it is your own fault. Many members donate something they made, or some chicken related item they have found to our raffle table and immediately following lunch we draw names from a jar to disperse the treasures.

The park has an excellent playground close by the pavilion with restrooms a short distance away. The sidewalks and the general lay of the land makes it great for those with disabilities.

We have games for the little people and lots of birds and animals for sale or trade for you bigger kids.

My signature line contains a link that will give you all the pertinent information as well as direct you to links for attendance, potluck signup, and buy/sell/trade

Good afternoon. I was up earlier but between my neighbor's dogs misbehaving
he.gif
(I let them out in the morning because he leaves for work at 5 am) and other stuff I won't go into, it's apparently already afternoon. Hi to the newbies whose names I either can't remember and/or won't spell right. I know one mentioned she was south of TC. I am on the opposite side, about an hour south of Alpena so I will turn west and wave.

I am considering digging up the last section of my small fenced in veggie garden to plant more snow peas, the first batch started sprouting April 1 and more have appeared this morning. Also had a few MI taters from the store go to seed so I'm going to plant those in a trench just outside the fence for the heck of it. Got others coming in the mail next month for the big garden but with the ground thawed, dry and warm enough, wouldn't hurt to plant some extras.

My chicks could be arriving tomorrow so I'll probably re-check the brooder in the garage, and clean the bottom shelf since I'll be needing it in a couple weeks when they're too big for the upper section. I'll split 'em up half on each of the lower two levels. Otherwise, it's business as usual, walking my dogs, yelling at my neighbor's dogs to behave, making dinner, and goofing off because DH is and I don't see why I should be doing overly much when he isn't.

And RaZ, I think it's time to aim a trail camera at your neighbor to document her craziness.

Oh and the crazy neighbor is acting out again. Today is trash day and she put her garbage out in front of my house. Like right in the middle of front yard. Is that supposed to mean something?

I love it!!

would be hilarious to watch, i bet! Definitely crazy, that one. You just don't go putting trash in someone else's yard to make a point, no matter how mad you are..... I get her message, but that's so ghetto and has to be against a law in some way. Your yard can't be THAT dirty? Gheesh. kids make a terrific mess too, i just don't get how some people get so nuts over animal mess. At least theirs is biodegradable!

I had posted this pic a few weeks ago of my brooder and a lot of folks seemed to like it. So, DH has said he will be willing to make a couple of these to sell at Chickenstock if anyone is interested. Just pm me and let me know. Thanks.

I would advise against feeding layer to your birds as it can cause kidney problems. If it is necessary to have them feeding with adults it would be better to put all of them on Flock Raiser.

Thanks Opa, I was hoping someone would offer advice.

And anyone have any nice blue or green hatching eggs (standard, not bantam) for little Edna???
Oh, I am such a sap.

york - I have fertile blue/green eggs but think we're pretty far apart from each other. The thing is, I have a BR roo and an EE roo, so never sure who's the Daddy! Would offer to meet you somewhere, but I'm on a strict gas budget right now. I've never shipped eggs before but could try that.
hmm.png
Let me know if you're interested.

Welcome to Brethren, Wickischickies and shoomy! So glad to have three newbies! Lots of great chicken info and tons of laughs!

Maybe I can get some advice here. My Mom gave me the e-mail addy of my "brother" and said he would like to talk to me. I was about 25 when I found out that I had an older brother. I only ever met him once, in 1984 or so. I started to write an e-mail but I can't think of anything to say. Not a darn thing. It's not like me to be at a loss for words.

On another note, my egg laying project needs to be turned in no later than April 26th. The first run of data suggest that there is no correlation between amount of daylight and egg production in backyard flocks. With my flock as a control group, there is a strong indicator that egg production actually decreased as the days got longer. I still have to run the analysis for scientific confidence.
I'm with Grandma on your brother. Didn't you just say the other day sometimes your mom is getting confused? Maybe you can use that as a starting point, trying to clarify what was said.

On the eggs - I have had additional light in my coop since November so they have the same hours consistently, however if you look at my egg chart I was averaging about 9 in January and 18 now, so I would say seasons have as much to do with it as the light factor. Good luck on your project.

Very nice! What eggs are you getting?
Spangled Russian Orloff. It has become a sad joke, me trying to get them. Last year I tried a batch with my old incubator and had a total hatch failure. Second round I got the wrong eggs, my fault with miscommunication!
hide.gif
Third round was a hatchery order that they canceled a week before shipment and I had to substitute other chickens because it was a group order. And since that time I have been on a waiting list. So.... although overrun by chicks I have some money stashed and DH had no comment so I will be ordering the eggs.
