14-16 hours of daylight maximizes production. In either case, the data are what the data are. I still have 15 flocks' data to crunch.

You know, for two years now, I have been keeping a record of not only how many eggs a day I get, but from which breeds. Himself thought I was a bit anal, but my reasoning was that if I'm going to sell eggs, I want the best producers.

Now, I had data starting in December, both years. Hope this comes out okay.

edited to delete chart because it chopped off half.

Will try something else

Ideally, there would a database of what breeds produce eggs on what schedule. There are plenty of websites that provide this information but it is largely anecdotal. It doesn't mean that it is faulty data, just uncontrolled reports as Olive mentioned. For example, one of my BSLs started laying in September and has only missed 4 days in all that time. Meanwhile her sister hen didn't start until Thanksgiving and at most only lays 3 times a week. It is was it is.

If you have that data and want to share it with me, I can add it to my project. I would just need eggs per day from Jan 1 to March 31 and your location so I can get the daylight minutes.

That sounds like a good plan Juise. Perhaps you could swab a couple of your adult chickens first and then swab the two chicks with symptoms. Please let us know if you find a pharmacy with the swabs and growth media. I have a submittal form that Dr. Fulton from M.S.U. emailed to me. If you can p.m. me your home email, I will forward the form to you so that you can send it in with the samples. Also he asked that the samples be sent by overnight mail.

It will, unfortunately, all come down to how much it costs. I would like to do more than one swab if I can. As of last night, it was three chicks showing symptoms - the first with the icky eye and the sneeze, and two others with runny noses, one of which has an eye that is starting to look worse. Today I observed even the ones that looked perfectly fine sneezing.

I will definitely swab the one that started showing symptoms first, on the basis that it is probably most present in her, and if I can afford it, I would also like to swab one of our older girls as well. I'd be grateful if you can send me that form, I'll PM you my e-mail.

I know the feeling! I dont think clean people currently live at my house either. I haven't had much time to!! :(

I'm right there with you two, there has been so much to do outside lately that inside has really fallen behind! I spent a good chunk of today trying to get things back into some sort of order, I didn't have the heart to keep the kids in all day in this beautiful weather, but I easily could have cleaned inside that long and not been done! The trick is cleaning things faster than they trash them. I'm not sure I actually achieved that, I probably ended up just exchanging one cleaner area for another trashed area. Argh! I sent them downstairs to play while I tried to clean upstairs, and when I came down to check on them, not only had they gotten a million and one things out, but the baby had gotten hold of a roll of paper towels and shredded it everywhere! It looks like it snowed in my basement. *sigh*

Well, :dejected sigh: i am pretty sure this time the eggs didn't make it. Little rose is definitely sick, i think when the water tipped over she caught a bad chill. When i got there today, she was in the nest, but not sitting, just standing there all weak and glassy eyed. Eggs were stone cold again. I put her into the dog crate so she could have more room to get better, since she has been away the others are picking on her. I gave her the eggs, because she didn't seem to know what to do without them, and covered her up a little with a blankie, that made her happy. I have been digging as many worms as she can eat from the manure pile, it is the only real food she'll eat. So sad, i hope she pulls out of this. She tried soooo hard.

I should have cleaned in the house... Instead I cleaned the 3 coops... LOL. I am actually glad that I chose that over house work today. LOL. Cuz that lady was checking out everything! She thought it was so cool SO, I am so glad that
1) It rained so hard this morning, all the chicken poop is washed away
2) My coops were nice and fresh
3) No flies in the duck coop.

LOL. So, thats a good thing. AHAHAAHAA

I don't mind sharing, but then we put lights on January 1st, so wouldn't that skew any data I collected? Plus, we sold 8 chickens during last month so the data wouldn't work anyway.

Just took my weekly chicken diary pics. I wont show you guys all of them, they're not as cute anymore lol. (I mean, if you want to see the whole flock I will post them

) But here's a pic of the unlikely chicken that became my favorite. I didnt even want a "boring white chicken" at first...

She has the best personality of all of them, loves to be held. And she's so white!! I think she'll be pretty when she's full grown.

Give her sugar water... egg yolks with some baby vitamin drops WITH OUT iron. pro vi sol, or poly vi sol... And a light heat lamp... bout 75 watt should work... Since I have been giving Leila those things everyday, she's perkier and crabbier, and she is not dropping weight. I gave Veena sugar water when she was seeming weak... and it helped perk her up too. Worth a try.
