Hi Everyone! Back from AZ yeah and ordered my chicks today from Meyer. I bought the 25 rainbow pullet chicks since I could not make my mind up. I only wanted about 10 chicks but suddenly I forgot all about how many I was going to get, oh I also ordered a Black Jersey Giant cockerl and one easter egger. I will be getting them between May 15-17. I am a little nervous and excited to. So the plastic tub will not be big enough till they go outside? Then what will I put them in? I can't wait for Chicken Stock to meet everyone.

I was wondering if anyone here has or is using an LG incubator? I have a hatch going on right now (at home while I'm sitting here at work!!!) and now I'm seriously nervous about the heating element burning them when they hatch. I'd been a little concerned but was just reading another thread and now I'm SERIOUSLY nervous!

Roosting seems to be a topic with lots of opinions and lots of confusion. So I will give my opinion based on experience, observation, and lots of research. Some lighter breeds, that are capable of flight, will often roost in trees. Round perches or branches will work for roosts in a coop. However, that doesn't mean that it is a good perch. If you watch a chicken on a round perch they must constantly grasp the perch to stay on. They are constantly shifting position to maintain balance. Any time another bird bumps them they must reposition. Chickens are ground birds so their feet have developed for walking not grasping.

Due to generations of selective breeding they are much heavier than their wild jungle bird progenitors. With this increase in body weight and shape their breast became an intergral component in roosting. A wide flat roost allows this 3 point roosting position. They can lower their body down and lift their feathers to increase the insulation properties. On a round perch they can not do this as effectively. Watch you birds on cold days and see how much larger they appear. This is due to expanding their feathers.

If you are concerned about flock dynamics or jostling for better roost position, you could do as I have. Make all of your roosts the same height. My roosts are positioned at 4' with a small ladder to assist in access.

I would not be worried about a chick getting burnt in any commercially manufactured incubator. When the eggs were placed in lock down at 18 days the turner should have been removed. There will be sufficient head room for the newly hatching chicks. While I'm not going to state that it would be impossible for a chick to receive a burn mark from the element it would be extremely rare and a very large chick.

I personally feel that opening the incubator to remove chicks is more hazardous to the hatch than the possibility that one might get burnt.

Wow... I go to work, and you guys gab and gab! LOL

About the perches, I have 2x4, plate guards, and dowels. ALL of them get used. The birds use the plate guard and the dowels more in the big coop, and in the littles coop... they use a 2x12! Even though there is a 2x4 in there. LOL. SO, I go with the variety, they pic what they prefer.

I'd try the pen sitting with food and meal worms. I can't wait to start treats and getting my birds outside once the wind dies down.
It seems like my chickens are vegetarians. I've tried giving them mealworms, earthworms, grubs, slugs...they don't seem to be interested in that kind of meat I guess. They just look at it, cock their head sideways, warble and then run away. It's pretty funny but I don't think they're into that. They LOVE peas though THey see me coming from 50 feet away with my bowl of peas and they are so excited. Maybe I will try the sitting with food thing, see how that goes. I'll also have more time w/them when I'm done w/school in 6 wks so hopefully that'll help too.

I think it would be a great idea for you gamers to start your own thread dedicated to gaming. We do talk about a lot of topics on here other than chickens, but sometimes it is nice to have a social forum for others with the same interests.
I'm the same as Juise, I was just curious what type of games the others liked to see if we could get together about that some time; it doesn't matter to me if it's never mentioned here again. I honestly didn't think it would get people that annoyed about it.

I wasn't upset, I was mostly trying to find out what games people were playing in case we could hook up. So.. if anyone takes up LoL plx to tell me know, thx.

I know how you feel though, I feel the same way anyone starts talking about sports.

What does "run into the double seventh" mean?
X2 on the games...but I do know a thing or 2 about sports, lol. That particular reference escapes me as well though, hehe

Remind me to tell you which Bee Gee asked me for my autograph.

What I did was put them in a plastic tote until they were about 4 wks. I also only had 6 though, so hope your tub is pretty big! Then at that point, I used our dog's metal crate which was taller and a little bigger floor space; I put some branches in the wires to make a couple perches for them. They were in there about a week before I couldnt stand their messiness anymore! They were moved out there the following weekend since they were all feathered except under their wings.

Gaming-Gamers... Does Angry Birds count? How about Mah Jongg?

Ugly featherless chicks... I LOVE IT! That chick puts Mom2's Uggos to shame in the ug department.

Olive... Yup. Skimming is great.

JustPluckit, Welcome to the thread.

Kimmie, welcome home.

EMAW, You're only going to be an hour away from me. Welcome home to MICHIGAN! Even though, I am saying it 2 months early. I am sorry, I do not know how the schools are down that way. My sister's kids did go to school in Schoolcraft for a very short period. I don't think she had a problem with their system there.

Sarah... Make the most of those last five shifts. Accidently over stuff the toilet... Unplug a printer... crash a computer.... or two.... stick ABC gum in unexpected places. Just don't pee on anybody's chair. That will land you in court... HAHAAHAA.

CG... Oh, if only... I think that little pig would be so darn cute on a leash and a walk down the street here. People would probably think nothing of it. I am already the weirdo with a gazillion chickens... I get caught carrying my chickens... letting them hang out on my shoulder... Bragging about their total cuteness. HEHEE

I didn't know that a cockerel at 14 weeks would be active in the S>E>X> department already. My only un-named cockeral, that looks a lot like Rocky Rhode keeps getting Mr. Fluffers girls when Mr. Fluffers isn't looking. BUT, when he is finished, those same girls then proceed to kick the crap out of him. It is quite funny. Guess its almost time to take them to the butcher. 3 more weeks. How do I fatten them up a bit more first? They are not dual purpose... SO, they'll probably be soup chickens. Roopert however will more than likely be a good roasting bird. He's nice a thick. Will post pic later...

Gotta go feed the 2 legged creatures...
