I should look into buying a share of a cow.

To introduce a chick to something new, you do the chick chick chick thing, and pick it up and drop it a few times, that's what the adults do.

Also, be it an adult or a little bird, when i pick them up i gently push them down and hold down on their back, and kinda cup their head/comb in my hand, hard to explain. They will usually calm down, since i am imitating a "Momma" holding them in her wing. Even works on my roo, you will know they are happy when they rub their little combs and faces all over your palm. Some birds like their chin and neck scratched, too, just like a cat! :) If they get frantic and keep trying to stand up, it's not working and let them go, just keep trying and good luck!

What is this? I don't understand what that sentence means..lol...

I used to pick them up and put them on their backs when they could fit in my hand, in fact my ISA red would just instantly fall asleep when I did this. They don't like it anymore lol. But I guess like you said I will keep trying with them, and I'm gonna try what you said about pushing them down. I try to hold tham against me to keep their wings in and pet them, they calm down a little but still want to get away. I hope all the advice works for my chickens!! I know they are "farm animals" but I'd still like to be able to handle them.

Oh I didn't know the maple syrup fest was this week end, maybe I will have to stop by
Sometimes those things come first. It's gonna be small but I need to attend. I was also planning on trying to stop at the Maple Syrup Fest in Shepard also.....I want some good syrup! On a happier note....Instead of the usual luncheon after a funeral many people hold, my cousins have decided to have all the family members ( basically all the cousins ) meet later that evening at a local tavern for dinner, drinks, reminiscing and just plain visiting & catching up with each other. Many live out of town or state and it's rare that you get us all together at one time. I most definitely could go for a good bar burger!!

Wait, how old are your chickens? Do you normally have to put them in?

I can't speak for Teeville, but the chicks in my pictures are about 8 weeks old. They have been in the big coop for 2-3 weeks and go in to roost all on their own. They usually go in about an hour before the big girls do.

Oops, some confusion. My coop chickens are a year old. Normally, we lock them up for the night about an hour before dark. Most are in or near the coop at that time, but we have a big yard with lots of great things for them to dig around in so we usually have some that are still making the most of their day. It's simple enough to get them in their coop, though. No chicken can resist a bed time treat. They come running and jump right into the coop.

Yesterday was an exception as it was after 8pm when we locked them up when we should have done it around 6:30pm. So they were already in and set for the night with the exception of the door being shut and locked. I remember last year when they were a few months old that once the daylight started dimming they wanted to go in. Since we were late and it was already fairly dim out, they just did what they would have naturally done on their own if we didn't make it a point to put them to bed before that time.

Not so far

Our kitten took a ride down the laundry chute courtesy of my little sister. Fortunately Mom had not done laundry for a few days

Ah, okay. That reminds me, I have been meaning to ask...

What time does everyone shut their chickens in? Do most of you lure them in before they would normally go in, or do you wait until later when they have gone in themselves to shut things up? I go back and forth, depending on my day, but I have been wondering if it would be best to shut them in a bit earlier. They still have access to their run in our set up, I only lock up the run door and leave the coop door open.

Also, I wish we had a laundry chute and our laundry things in the basement. I wonder if I could work out moving the machines down there...
