Sarah - One of our old Daycare parents, (the only one we actually liked and got on with,) swore by this mix, he used it at his home and on commercial jobs as well. I have not used it, and you would have to find out if it is chicken friendly, but here is is.

You will need:
  • One full can of regular pop (any kind-no diet soda)
  • One full can of beer (no light beer) 12oz
  • 1/2 Cup of Liquid dishwashing soap (do NOT use anti-bacterial dishwashing liquid)
  • 1/2 Cup of household ammonia
  • 1/2 Cup of mouthwash (any brand)
Directions:
  • Pour into 10-gallon hose-end sprayer (other sizes will work too)
  • In high heat, apply every three weeks

Thanks for the info guys...but maybe I didn't explain right?

The chickens aren't out in the lawn. They are in a pen that is at the edge of the lawn, where I keep my veggie garden. I was just wondering how close to that area we could go w/the fertilizer but I'm figuring as long as we stay a few feet back it should be ok. We do the lawn every year but this is the first time there's chickens nearby.

And 1.5 acres is way too much lawn for 6 chickens to fertilize in the time period we'd like it done in. And it's more for weed killing than fertilizing...I don't know how effective chicken poop is at eliminating dandelions.

Oh yea I meant to say earlier, Opa you're more than invited to come over and pick millions of dandelions for that wine if you want!!! haha

Theron....we love the girls, although I must say one acts very Roo-ish or she's top gun!! Needless to say we are enjoying them!!! The OEG...aka: Squirt is such a sweetie. She always snuggles & finds a spot under or close to the others.

As for reading books....I use to read all the time until I had children & then I still read, but it was on their level...Dr. Seuss, etc....
My favorite authors are Nora Roberts & Sandra Brown. Smut, Mystery and Adventure all tied up in one.....good fast reading!

Broken Toes.....doesn't sound like fun and I've heard they hurt. Hope your gets better fast. Have you tried to get a shoe on yet???

RIRJEN......CONGRATS.....Happy you did so well!

Yes, but they have a separate run area that I planted grass in just for them, that will be their "lawn" most of the time. It's just not growing well yet since it's been so cold and honestly they have enough fun eating the grass and weeds right now that are in my garden that they haven't needed to get out.

Ours must have heard me telling DH that I was dropping him back off at my mom's (we took him from her barn as a kitten, his sister is still there) last night, this morning he delivered a dead mouse to my feet. "Look, Mom. I hunt!" Unfortunately for him there are no shortage of cats who can catch mice and while I'll miss the little stinker, I won't miss him enough to deal with cat pee. Frankly, I have little patience for the litter box as it is. Cats are not my thing, but then mice are even less my thing so he'll have a replacement before long. Seems keeping a cat around is about the only way to keep them away here. Otherwise they come in from the fields. We've done traps, poison, those little ultrasonic plug-in doo-dads. Whatever it is, the presence of a cat is the only thing that keeps them at bay.

I have eight cats and STILL get mice in the house. Much easier to deal with than these stupid ants that are taking over.

Congrats Jen on the show! AND BLUE showgirls???/ I am definitely wearing blinders to chicken stock...

Juise-
At the petstore, there is a product called Natures Miracle that does wonders for removing cat urine.

Sarah, six chickens will dig up the 'area' you give them and break out of the fence and free range your backyard most likely. They dig and tear up the ground in a pen/run/fenced area pretty quick. Most of our runs/pens are pure dirt and the chickens get let out each day to get grass and bugs because then you get the best eggs and they are healthier also. Soo we used a weed and feed on the front yard but not the back acre where the chickens were or anywhere near them.

Does your fertilizer include a weed killer? Maybe RaZ would know how long it would take to be completely gone from the grass and soil. The weed killers I looked at were absorbed by the plants/grass and I could not find one that was safe to use per our vet or lawn service.

This chick said "Really, another picture?????" It makes me laugh to see them pose when they're not even fully feathered.

The greens on both plants are best tasting young.
I think i remember reading that it's just the stem you aren't supposed to eat, it's the "milk" that isn't supposed to be good. Also, don't forget clover honey! I have an old recipe that calls for i want to say 40 apiece of white and purple clover, then you boil then with sugar water to get the clover honey. haven't tried it yet, but sounds good :)

We did buy a chocolate serama cockerel though.
Ooooo! is this a true chocolate, or a dun? or just brown? (Dun breeds like blue, chocolate breeds like lavender, with the genes being passed from father to daughter or from momma to son)

Everyone's chicks are so cooperative! Mine think I am a great and terrible monster come to eat them. A little like a feathery, wood chip Tokyo when Godzilla shows up trying to whistle softly and offer treats. So far they only eat chick food out of my hand (and then only the oldest birds). My sister in law's birds love yogurt and are a bit tamer so I am a bit jealous. Here is hoping they warm up to me.

I bought some endive and water cress for the ducks and tomorrow they will play in the water and eat some treats before heading back into their tub. Now if it would just warm up so they can all have some roaming time.
