but Im trying to convince my mom to allow me to get about 6 hens once i sell my 2 Pekin ducks..
But I was wondering... What are good breeds of chickens for S.W. Mi? I would prefer they arent bantams...(to try to limit the number of predators that would thing of trying to snatch a few.) I would like them to be good egg layers too.
thanks guys!

Just give them some layer feed. It's not going to hurt them.

Yay!!

Ferrret - I don't remember where you are located, but if you go to http://www.weather.com and enter your zip, it will tell you the alerts for your area. We have severe thunderstorm and flash flood warnings here. I didn't have power for most of today, it is back up now... for now, anyway. XD

the short and the tall of it....

RaZ is still putting up with crap head neighbor. Olive relocated her geese. Also pigs to Farmerboy. Juise is pregnant. I mean she's not pregnant, but its fun to say she is. Sarah finally is out of her hated job. Fife is back. um... Hold on there is more... Mom can't stop hatching uggos. Now she has other hatching uggos too. Plenty of chicks hatching, some chick losses. New dogs, passed dogs... Pullets turning into cockerels, poison ivy (Olive's family). Lots of new members to the thread, kimmie needs a coop name, new coops, refurbished coops... lets see... what else... Ah, head aches, back aches, colds, pneumonia... A few more weeks till Daron gets his final answers for his experiment, we are all pulling for him on that... Oh yeah, Olive broke her toe while knocking up a pig... lets see... I think that is the jist of it all.

I hereby motion that Nova be in charge of a weekly recap post.

Juise, I was lurking on weather.com for an hour to see if there were any changes to the warnings. The storm has died down now and the severe warnings have been pushed down to watches.
I'm mostly just frustrated that I can't hear the siren. If there was a tornado, I don't think I would know about it in time to get to safety because the siren is so faint. The last time the siren went off, we only knew about it because BF's mom called us to warn us.

I agree, that was a good read, lol.

Ferrret - That sucks. I used to live in a house that backed up against a fire station, and they would run the siren every Saturday morning, as a test, I guess, can't say I miss being able to hear it, heh. At least radio and internet make it pretty easy to check if you suspect the weather may be going that way.

Oh yes, and

to the newcomers.

Eggs going into lockdown tomorrow night.
Candled all 30 eggs at 13 days. 12 look pretty good, I guess. Large and dark.

Finished my brooder today.
Made it out of a kitchen base cabinet turned upside down.

Awesome, thank you so much for going to all that trouble!
What did Sara do and what is she doing now?
Is Opa behaving?
Maybe Olive can relocate poison ivy to Raz's neighbor?
I'll spread the word on Juise's pregnancy on all the forums I go to :)
..and yes, Nova should be the recapper. It was great!

You have to have a little faith in old Mother Nature. While it does happen that a hen is absent too long or in some cases abandons her nest it is extremely rare.
I do have faith. :) I just keep reading about how crazy important lock down is and how you must NEVER open the lid, and I was curious if that was the same for broody incubation as well. Glad to know it isn't. :)
