Well, I needs SSS.

$#*^, shower, and shave?

The more I thought about it, the less I think they could have gotten it here. It was pretty soon after we brought them home that the one started to show signs of trouble, not long enough I think for it to have come from here. Also, if it was something like MG that was here already, or the older chickens had come with it as day old chicks, and they had always had it but never shown any sign... I got to thinking about the rooster we rehomed. Out of our first batch of 6 chicks we ended up with one rooster, and when he was 7 months old or so we finally found a new home for him, (actually I just recently found out that some of you may know the lady who adopted him here as Scrummycat.) He never had any issues from the 3 hour drive across the state to his new home, which from what I have read I think probably would be sufficient stress to bring it out, and nor did he or any of their ten hens have any issues thereafter. Talked to DF after the chicks got sick and they said they were having no issues there, hopefully they were being honest with me.

Anyway, I am not taking that as a sure sign by any means, but it does give me hope that it was just a simple infection brought on by the stress of the 3 hour drive and move to a new home.

I thought we'd talked about incubation periods way back when? What was the time period/what did we figure out then? Or maybe it was someone else?

Prolonged feeding of high calcium to phosphorus ratios to young chickens can result in low FCR, poor growth, structural changes to the kidneys, etc. Feeding layer feed for a week isn't going to be the end of the world.

We did, and the information was useful and I think I noted it but made no reply at the time. It was 6 days when her eye was so gooey and nasty that I took a picture and asked about it, but it was a couple days before that that it had started, so it would have been around 3 - 4 days after getting her that she began to fall ill. I believe Chicken Grandma said at the time that the incubation period for MG was 6 - 10 days and that is why I have been hopeful that this isn't the case.

the short and the tall of it....
What a great synopsis! :)
What did Sara do and what is she doing now?
Ive been working at a collection agency for the last 5 years, until today (my last day). I just got another job as a vet tech, which is what I'm about to graduate with a degree in.
I did the ants pants dance today. I stood right on top of a giant ant hill, one that I knew was there, but forgot about like a bloody idiot. I stood right there cutting grape vines, when the crawly feeling began to steal over me. I looked down and I was absolutely covered in those huge black and red ants up to my waist. I lost no time in legging it, but, of course, they do not shake off, so to hell with what the neighbors think, I dropped my pants and made for the house in a hurry. I'm not being eaten alive by monster ants for the sake of modesty!
EEWWW!! OMG I would have done the same thing. That gave me the creeps just reading it! Ick

Well I am pretty dang tired tonight...gonna head to bed. Hope you all enjoyed the day while it was nice!!

Between the toe, a mysterious shoulder strain, and an even more mysterious wrist strain I'm falling apart. And now you're telling me my mind's going, too? Aging is a witch.

Ugh, or I am. I don't know, Olive, I might try to go back and check. Today I lost my credit card because when I went to the ATM I suddenly could no longer remember my pin... I tried until the machine ate my card.

So it's probably me. Every day my children work to turn my brain into pudding. I just remember being kind of relieved when I heard 6 - 10 days because I felt that things had started before 6 days. Either way, though, I will know soon enough.

Also, I just realized that in my picture it does not look like I have any clothes on, and I would like to clarify that I am not nude with a chicken...

hahaha Juise! I dunno...by the look on the chickens face, um....

I had all sorts of replies last night, but my husband made me go out to eat, so now I cant remember what they were.

I didnt get any pictures taken of the duccles either because he made me leave. But I will.

Today is friday...

whooo hooooo....

Quite the storm that rumbled through here last night. Several times the lightning flashes were so close together that I could see across the yard. I'm glad that there wasn't a lot of wind accompanying the rain. The rain is still falling but it looks like it should be ending before to much longer. I'm concerned about the volume of water that came down overnight. Hope's stepfather's place is prone to flooding and hopefully we won't be facing a big mess at his house this morning.

David lives north of Howell and that area seems prone to power outages when storms involve a lot of wind. Since David is south helping my oldest son I called his wife to make sure she called me if she had any problems. So far no calls so the power must still be on.

When the storm first hit last night Hope's oldest son called to inform us that his wife's water had broke and they were headed for the hospital in Ann Arbor. We've yet to hear if the twins have arrived so I'm sure Hope had a fitful night wondering.

Even with rollout nest boxes I occasionally find evidence of egg eating. It can be very difficult finding the bird responsible but I definitely now know which of my hens is the guilty party. I placed a broody Ameraucana hen in a cage with 12 Welsummer eggs. A check on her a little later revealed her sitting on only 8 eggs so I removed the 4 she wasn't able to cover. Yesterday morning when I check her I found a portion of egg shell laying to one side of the nestbox. As I approach her she stood and I could see she was only sitting on 4 eggs. Obviously she had eaten the other 4. I left her with the remaining eggs to see what happens but her days are numbered.
