Here is a picture of my Bella. She is not a cow, nor is she a lady, apparently.

I got her from an abusive family about 2 years ago. They would ignore her, scream at her if she did anything that a puppy is supposed to do. Mostly they ignored her until she did something they didn't like, which was pretty much anything.
These people live next to a friend of mine and I would play with her over the fence. I often joked that I was going to kidnap her and save her from THOSE people.
Then one day when I was there, I saw the husband swing a kick at her, so I yelled at him. He said that for 2 cents he would take her to the pound. I pulled out a nickle and said that I'd take her and he could keep the change. He asked of I was serious and I said that I was. He said that if I could catch her then I could keep her. I went around to his gate and called her. She ran around him and right up where I could grab her collar. She walked with me to my truck and jumped right in.
Not that I needed another dog, but I brought her home and I'm darn glad that I did.
She had "issues" for a while, nervous piddling, barking at people, cowering and other behaviour problems. But I worked with her every day and my other dogs helped as well. I found that she wasn't exactly treat motivated but did thrive on reassuring praise. Positive reinforcement some would say.
There is no doubt that it took time and effort to socialize her to the pack but she has turned into one of the best dogs that I have ever had. She gives my golden a run each day, tells me if a chicken gets out of the run and warns me of any strangers that come into the yard. She still has a few deep-seated issues that pop up from time to time (like the f-bomb word) but overall she has grown into a great dog.
I think that just about any dog is worth trying to save. It's up to the human to decide if they want to make the effort. IMHO
