Right now...
That's why I want bees. <3
Olive - you know, I have a cat named Olive and I always feel like I am conversing over the internet with my cat every time I address you. Anyway, that was not what I was going to say. You can "bee line" the foraging bees near you to see where their hive is. Once they are done collecting, they fly straight back to the hive via the quickest route. So you can follow that bee until you lose it, then wait for another to go by to get you closer. It should take you about forever. Or, you can get really complicated, and it will still take you about forever.
You are an evil, evil, vile man, do you know this?
That was my last 2 days! I came in yesterday at dark shaking and feeling like I was going to vomit, which means I got a lot done... right? Or... maybe that's just me... I think I pushed it too far yesterday. I felt terrible. I think the biggest problem was most likely that I didn't drink any water while working in the sun all day, but coffee is so much more delicious! I expected to be all but laid out today after the last 2 days of this, but actually I feel better this morn than I did yesterday morn. Good luck!
Yay, Nigellas! I was thinking of that while the discussion was going on, but I couldn't remember what it was called and I couldn't find it.
I didn't respond because I didn't know the answer. I just got a few araucanas and EEs, but I am not at present feeling like recommending the source. I'm not planning to use it again.
fuzzybutt love - No, indoor will not work, yes an outdoor oil based stain will most likely stain the cement. Get yourself a nice cheap drop cloth for painting. Plastic ones can be really cheap, especially if you only need one the size of a trellis.
We have a Habitat for Humanity resale store here that is really great for buying things like that. Of course, you are limited to the selection of colours they happen to have, but it is cheap.
Might want to see if you have anything of the like in your area.
Amy PT - I think the only problem with you getting a different breed right now will be because you are adding a younger chick to your current ones, and anything on top of that to make them stand out more probably isn't going to help them. We have 7 different breeds and haven't had any issues, but they were not added together under those circumstances. If you really want to, though, I think you could try, but you may end up either needing to be able to have a divider in your brooder, with both sides having access to food / water / heat until they get used to each other, or you could do another brooder entirely and start introducing them together when they are a bit older and not quite as far apart in size. You never know, though, they might just all get along from the get go.
When I went in to Townline they didn't have any more chickens than they has listed.
Like so many hobbies, starting off is the biggest expense.

I got bees this year because I always thought it would be neat to keep bees. I know at some point I'm going to be randomly leaving honey in malls and gas stations just to get rid of it. But I will say this: I've had my bees installed for just about 2 weeks. I read tons of books and was fascinated. Once I got them I'm even more so. Maybe someday I'll try to put into words the feeling of working with and having (at this point) just a glimmer of understanding of this massive organism made up of individual parts that works and can be read more efficiently than a machine. For now I just love to watch them. And they seem totally fine with me doing so. I'm going to stop before I gush. I love them.

Yes, yes you do need some ducklings.

Today has a long TO DO list attached, almost all very physical.

All that talk of cleaning/not cleaning reminded me of a poem I love:

I suppose we should all send you a PM saying "Sorry can't help you" just so you feel you're getting the proper attention?
