Well now that I made some friends on here lol and all it took was a little trolling jk I can tell you a little more bs about myself and situation. we are new to backyard chickens and live in the ann arbor area .Our small young flock consist of 2 rhode island reds and a leghorn from Mcmurry hatchery all currently 15 weeks old . I'm looking for a new easter egger to replace 1 we just lost RIP Big. she decided it was a good idea to jump the neighbors fence where their pitbull was waiting, she didn't have a chance :( ironically and sadly she had layed her first egg that day, a beautiful pastel blue that was 3 days ago she was about 25 weeks. Big really added a nice color a different look to the flock.
we are also proud parents of 2 boys 6 month and 2 yrs old and I cant forget our to jack russells Reese and Cabela
I can see there are some very colorful personalities here on and I am I'm looking forward to discussing chickens and all other BS with you

Cheers

Thanks to you and the others who responded.
Yeah... "I'd like to go smaller" isn't quite clear, is it? What I meant was, I'd like to go with a smaller breeder over a huge hatchery. But, you make some good points about parasites. Thanks.

We have a SLW, and Australorp, and the BO. We'll be replacing the BO with another. Are you saying getting a different breed isn't a good idea? I was thinking a BO and another good winter, family friendly, quieter breed, for 4 total chickens. I was considering 2 bantam chicks, and am reading conflicting reports about mixing them w/ standard sized birds. And it looks like sexing bantams isn't done?

I just checked Townline's website, and it looks like they don't have much selection. Is it likely they'd have more variety for a walk in customer?

Thanks again!
Amy, my flock is a mix of bantams and standard chickens, and younger and older birds. I would definately not add just one bird to a flock, as they often get beat up. but you can mix them with one or two more docile birds, then reintigrate them into the group. Space is a big consideration when mixing birds up, if they have room to get away that is always better.

Chickenstock may be a place for you to get a new bird, there will be many people there with birds of various ages and breeds.
wow thanks everybody I haven't even got to read all your posts yet. I was mostly just being silly

but I really know how to get you folks answer now
peace and love
Sorry you got jumped on so hard, I was surprised because I took your post as humerous - although it can be hard sometimes to tell humor in posts. There are others here who have asked silly questions and made strange or offensive posts that have not had their knuckles rapped as hard as you did.

Well,

and I wouldn't advise adding just the one, come on, you know you wanted at least 2 anyway.

I just read the Chickenstock link. That would be a dangerous place for me. I'd pretty easily cave to the "oh... take 4, they're small" sentiment. ;) On the other hand, it sounds like a lot of fun. I'd just have to bring the voice of reason. I call him Jim.

There are four reasons I don't answer questions:

1) I don't know. (So very rare, I tell you.

)

2) I didn't read your post

3) The only answer I have is over-the-top snarky. (Yes, I think even worse things than I already post. I KNOW!)

4) I think answering is a waste of my time. Mostly because you've demonstrated that you're not really interested in advice/answers consistently and repeatedly in the past. (And yes, now I know you'll all be wondering if I'm talking about you in this one. That's the fun part! Bwahaha!)
I like you.

My sister and her husband are Amy and Jim too - although she is the voice of reason in that family

No really, Chickenstock is great fun, even if you don't take any birds home. Plus you get to meet Granny, and eat some of Opa's smoked chicken (Mmmm).

Welcome chickenfresh! I am fairly new to chickens so don't look to me for much info, lol! I do enjoy the soap opera esque aspect of this great thread though and have learned a ton.
