Meet the new ones... I am going to have to baby sit while they are in the run with the big girls. The big girls were TOTALLY freaked out by them... Poor little things were chasing the big girls around trying to get some loving... LOL. Laia is totally not broody now. She was the least freaked, the most curious. Nina, the biggest of them all, was not happy. I have never seen a duck bristly... She was. Mori tried to run them over several times. Mori is also the one who acts like a boy and lays an egg. Like I said... Lesbian ducks... Well and Leah was the only one who was just freaked, but not mad. HAHA So anyway, they are now in a 2x4 brooder in the garage with a heat lamp, grass as you can see, and straw in the little tote that is on its side so they have a hidey nest area. SO, needless to say, I now have 2 more ducks, and thank goodness I got them for a buck a piece.... I'd be willing to part with them since my girls are totally not having it. Worth a try. I figure I will babysit them in their run a few times a day, so they big girls will get used to them, and they will get used to the big girls, but not leave them with the big girls at night for a few weeks... Juise, would you like some PEKINS? If one turns out to be a drake, I will take it back... LOL

Got my meaties installed in the old brooder. Oh, if only they weren't meaties... They are the most adorable little things. So docile. Can pick them up and they don't even freak out and try and get away. Well anyway, got 10 of them, and have two 75watt bulbs in there with them. I was going to pt the 250, but the space is very small, and just one 75 wt bulb over the chick water-er in the winter and the big water-er in the other side was enough to keep the water from freezing, so I think it'll be warm enough in the space they are in for now. Its only a 2x4 dog house, 2 feet high. I will build them a run in a few weeks.

My tomatoes are already starting to show fruit! Both the Roma and the German Johnson. SWEET! The strawberries are re-blooming and also showing new fruit. Double SWEET! I need to put chicken wire over them because them chickens like them. Naughty birds. The zucs, cukes, long and crooked necks are coming in good too. Also the pepper plants seem to be well also. The beans have finally sprouted good.

On a whim today, I bought some purple tomatoes. Going to start them tomorrow. AND Also on a whim I bought something called Lemon Cucumbers. I have never seen them before, didn't know there was such a thing. Of course I have never seen such a thing as purple tomatoes either...

My green onions are already doing great. I was picking and eating them straight out of the pot. I love that they come back every year if you don't pull them out at the root, even though that part is the strongest flavored. I just cut them off like grass, and let them regrow. YUM. The kids thought they were yuck. They did however like the sweet clover. Go figure.

Cute story... Jace was out side with me last night, and he comes running over and tells me he thought he saw something naked running through the back yard. I went back there to look with him, and we saw a young buck. He wants to catch it and keep it for a pet. LOL. I just think it was funny that he thought it was a naked person in the back. First deer he has ever seen in person.

Well anyway... RaZ good luck on your meeting next month. Hope all goes well. Maybe start getting receipts for those eggs you sell... Just in the case that you can use them to be considered FARM then. Just do as Olive said, and check those new amendments to be sure that the law works for you.

Nothing like a cool-aide to help protect a chicken. The other birds are probably thinking twice now about him...

And I have the smartest chicks. After 2 days, they have all figured out how to go up and down the ramp on their own. Neighbor has 8 week old chicks that have only just figured it out... And not all of them have it down yet. AND my 4 weeks olds are SILKIES! HAAHAHA.

To clarify -- because Olive does not wish for her comments to, in any way shape or form, be construed as support for using RTF to defend backyard flocks -- her only point was to give Raz a tip about recent amendments to the RTF Act that he may want to look into before his pre-trial meeting.

Sorry, Olive, if that's what my eta in my post made you think. I wasn't thinking that at all. I was just trying to say that it would be a good idea to make sure you know the law (or any law for that matter if being used in your argument of defense) in and out because it wouldn't do to go in and quote something only to have it shown to you that you were wrong due to some amendment because you didn't bother to brush up on it.

Nova - If one 75 watt bulb kept water from freezing in there in the winter, keep a close eye on those meaties. Meaties are not heat tolerant, they do better with cooler temps than other chickens. Over-heating is as much a possibility with them as under.

OMG.....These guys are so dang cute!!

I always plant Romas. My DH isn't crazy about them but I love their taste and the fact that they aren't so seedy & runny. They are great to dehydrate also!

When my DS was about 3-4 and we were at a stop light where there were houses on the corner he told me as the light turned green and I proceeded to go that there was a naked man in the window! He's 13 now and every now & then when we are at that light he starts to laugh & says....remember the naked guy! I never seen it and at the time didn't know exactly what he saw or whether or not to believe him. Thought maybe it was someone standing in their bay window shirtless & in shorts or something but he swears he knows what he saw to this day!!

Had a bit of a hawk experience today. DH and I were sitting on the couch when he says a hawk just swooped around the yard. I looked out the window and saw nothing so went back to reading. A few minutes later he says 'there it is again'. I still see nothing. This goes on for about 15 minutes with him seeing a hawk swooping and me seeing nothing when I finally see the hawk swoop. He had a HUGE wingspan! So I get up and look out the window and see it and it's joined by another one. I tell DH and as he's coming to look, the 2 are joined by a 3rd hawk. DH looks at the 3 when along comes another! They started to circle lower over our yard and DH was like 'what are they doing?' Um, looking for dinner! So I yelled out to the kids and we all ran out and got all the chickens gathered and put in their coop/pens. While we were doing that, the hawks flew away, but there was no way I was leaving any of the chickens out. So I guess they will be on lock down for a few days to try to get the hawks discouraged and moving on. It actually is ok because they weren't going to be let out tomorrow anyway because we'll be out all day for my DD's long awaited and finally here neurology appointment and tests.

So, since they are day olds, what temp should I keep it at for them? I had them with out the heat all day, and only turned the lamps on at 8:30 or so for over nights... I have a thermometer so I can monitor it. I'd hate for the little buggers to be too hot. They are at either end of the little coop, with nothing in the middle, so they can get away from the center of heat... Thanks for telling me though Olive, I wouldn't have known that.

Morning All!!

Woke up this morning and ran to the bator...nothing yet but lots of pips! I'm expecting chickies when I get home from work today. Hoping to get the "new" chicken coop up to par this weekend so the chicks can go into it.

Robin those buffs look nice!!!
Thanks Jen. I think they are beautiful. The people I bought them from even bathed them for me.

Thanks Bianca. Now if I could only find one with that real color.

After for sitting for 2 hours and listening to assault, drunk driving, shop lifting and drug dealing cases, the judge finally called me up. He read the file, looked up and said, "This is about a chicken?". After the laughter died down, we proceeded.

I was able to ask the ordinance officer how many chickens he saw and he admitted that he didn't see any. But he did have pictures taken by the neighbor that he gave to the judge. Judge Hammer then let me see the photos. They could have been taken anywhere. Just saying...

Anyway, the judge says that there is a fine involved and I would need to "take care of the problem" in the future bcause city ordinance says no to chickens. So I politely said that local ordinance does not supercede state law. I cited MCL 286.473. I said that I had case law and Court of Appeals ruling that chickens are indeed legal to have. Of the stack of documents I had with me, I gave him the MSUE summary document and said that I had a lot more documentation to support my case. So he says that I need to talk to the city attorney and discuss it with him. Then he says that he would have no problem living next to me or anyone who had chickens. He went on to say that several people in Garden City have chickens, ducks, bees and even one guy who has a grand-fathered donkey.

I think the judge seemed pretty reasonable about the whole thing. I will meet with the city attorney for a pre-trial conference on June 26 at 10:00 am. So I can gather even more supporting documentation to present.

In case anyone is interested, the case number is 12GC1470 OM.
Way to go Raz.
