Hi again, i wanted to let you guys know that so far the de'uccles and the new chicks are still perky and bright eyed, not sickly or "unthrifty" at all.

I credit it to the use of gamebird starter, since it has high doses of vitamins and minerals, and a higher protein content. Also, this brand has active cultures, to get the gut health started early on. My hens were also fed a gamebird quality pellet while laying spring hatching eggs. You can feed the higher protein feed for up to the first 8 weeks, then as adults when moulting and when laying hatching eggs.

Just to clarify, ROOSTER stays in the shack due to hormones, lol.

Unthrifty?

Okay, now I am a bit confused about the feed. I always get high protein feed, the feed store basically told me that the only important difference was that the high protein feed is better and so costs a bit more.

I know we need the rain... but I hope it comes tonight!!!! It can rain all it wants until morning...
Darn kids got me sick... They had a runny nose... I got a stuffy one

I had my brooder in my garage sale and I had one guy ask me if it was a husband catcher... Sometimes I am quick with the wit and said yes then asked him if he was looking to catch one. Everyone else that inquired about it... I told them it was good for spouses... Just enough room to turn around in

It was originally a sugar glider cage. I am going to lay it on its side and keep the chicks in it when they get too big for the baby brooder.

Beautiful and talented Grand daughter that you have there! So glad you got to see your family and glad you are safely home!

We certainly missed having coffee with you each morning so I hope you get rested up and then put a pot on for us!

Got home this evening after a 14 hour drive. I sure wish those boys did live closer however, seeing my granddaughter sure makes the long drive worthwhile. Last Saturday I got to watch her compete in a MJRC sanctioned rodeo. While she didn't place she has bettered her time and maybe soon she will be able to perform to her horses' capability.
beautiful picture, Sam! I am glad you had a safe and wonderrful trip, welcome back! Coffee's on- grab a cup and get out to tend the chickens before it gets too hot.

I used game bird starter when I hatched out quail- my chickens did very well on it...good stuff.

Morning! Not so awake yet this morning. There is lots to get done today but I'm not sure how far I will get. My tiller needed a new gas line yesterday and I'm not sure if DH got it finished. So hopefully I am planting some flowers and potatoes. My son has planting to do with his 4-h group later. I talked him out of the parade with the promise of fireworks - both in Mackinaw. Off to my coffee and book.

If took awhile to read on the posts but I've finished them and now I can try to get all the thing accomplished that are needing my attention. I've got to go and take egg out of the turner and put them in lock down. Then I need to plant the blackberry plants that I brought back for my sons. Tomato and pepper plants need to be purchased and planted.

Tomorrow I've got to put several racks of ribs in the smoker in anticipation of a get together Monday with Hope's sons and some friends.

Yet with all of that I intend to find a few moments to thinking about why we are having this holiday weekend. For too many families this weekend commemorates the sacrifice of their loved one. We all need to give thanks for all we have because of them.
