Well, it is nearing 6 A.M. Nothing like getting home after a Sunday delivery and standing in your yard and listening to the area roosters give the morning wake up. Along with my 6 that are crowing, the neighbors 1, I hear an additional 3, possibly 4. So, 8 for sure roos in a 1/2 mile stretch of road. Its great.

Ants have really taken over the house in the last few days. Big carpenters. I had them treated 3 years ago to a round of poison. Pre-chickens. Not had a problem in 3 years... Guess I better find something soon... What's safe around chickens?

Thank you so much - and SillyC (somehow this quote got missed in my other post). I actually think the faverolles might be a little too sweet and docile for my free range set up. But I might take that NH Red. She can bully my roos until they're big enough to bully back (assuming that she's not so mean that they won't grow up.)

I moved my golden buffs and blue andalusians out to them hutch coop today, it's the intermediary spot before the lucky winners get to move on to the real coop. The losers head to freezer camp unless they find other homes.




These guys will be 7 weeks old next Monday. The BA's sure are skittish. The bigger GB's are kind of laid back. All the GB roos will definitely be going to freezer camp, no point in breeding something that won't breed true. Haven't figured out who to keep with the BA's yet, I suppose I am supposed to keep the blue ones for breeding? The splash and black aren't the ones you breed for more? May have to keep the black one simply because she looks like a hen. First time with these guys. Appreciate any advice.

Nice to get them outside. Gives me time to clean the brooder before the new arrivals in 10 days. Those will be my original order, these guys were a whim back during that heat wave in March. I'm going to have way too many chickens, and this isn't counting the 21 guinea keets in the garage! Plus there's the 9 muscovy ducklings and I just found a new nest of eggs. Momma's getting busy.

If you breed black to blue splash you will come out with 100% blue. I have splash Andalusions and am looking for a black roo for them.

Good Morning everyone...

Worked hard in the yard all day yesterday, in spite of the rain...then went out with my cousins...complete with breakfast afterward....my head is killing me. What my non-chicken, non - dog, non-kid friends and family dont get is morning STILL comes early for me..there is no true sleeping in.
My d'uccles have figured out how to fly to the top of the chicken coop and then on to the roof of the house. I tried multiple times to get a picture to show you all but they are very fast and fly down when I focus in on them.

of course I got a notmeaty- ROO...of course. Best of all is that he doesnt crow..do they ever crow? *knock on wood* I thought for sure I was going to find him or the girl dead the other day after it was ninetyfive degrees. But they managed okay.

I Saved a TOAD this morning. YEP- a toad.
It was STUCK in the chicken wire. It had been trying to commit suicide by going into the chicken yard. But only half of it would fit, and it was as stuck as stuck can be. It took about fifteen minutes to get it free, and it is now in my flower-bed.


One of my silkies is broody. I thought I lost her. Couldnt find her anywhere. She is underneath the rabbit hutch in the back corner, and if you just look under there, youd never see her. She has dug a deep nest down in the mulch, and built up the sides in such a way that while huddling, she is completely hidden. I was actually searching for a body at that point that I found her....and 16 eggs. I took all but two from her. Again, I will give her a couple d'uccle eggs once they are pipped. My frizzle is brooding, and my sizzle quit being broody after someone scattered her nest OR a egg broke underneath her.

IM OUT OF COFFEE....*ugh*

As nice as visiting my sons was, sitting at my own table drinking coffee and listening to the world come awake is hard to beat. The gentle cooing of the doves under the eave, the last plaintive crys of barred owls in the distant wood, both seem to signal the end of night and the beginning of the new day. The dawn is the time when you determine the course of your day. You decide how you will face all the awaits you. Regardless of the travails that await you, a happy heart will be your best companion. The brief moments of solitude as son breaks over the horizon allow for quiet introspection; these are moments to be cherished.

While I was in Missouri I read a book that was a collection of interviews of people in their eighties and nineties who grew up in an east Texas area called the "Big Thicket". My son had purchased it because many of the recollections were about experiences with Black Mouth Curs, the breed of dog he recently purchased. What I gleaned for the book was the incredible optimism of people who grew up in extreme difficulty and hardship. They all cherished the simple beauty of the world around them and having lived what we today might find unbearable, still were grateful for all they had.

I can think of no better example of optimism than a man in his late nineties planting a new peach orchard. It reminded me that age is no excuse to not look forward to the future. Perhaps we may never reap the end result of our efforts but others will, and perhaps the effort is the true reward.

As with any recounting of "old times" there are many old misconceptions and beliefs, the so call "old wives tales". One I read intrigued me and since I have no way to verify or disprove it I must ask if some of you might do it for me. It was a claim that ducks will not eat shelled corn placed in a circular pattern with each kernal touching the next. The old woman recounting claimed that as a child for entertainment she had on numerous times constructed such a corn circle just to watch the ducks frustration. If someone owning ducks would try it I would be very interested in the result.

I'm getting so much done on my "staycation" and I only have 5 more days off.

I need to get some more 1x3's to finish the "X" pattern on the coop door...but the door is on and it's looking awesome! Now all we need to do is arrange the cooping on the inside, finish the roof and add on the runs! Here's a before and after picture so far...it's hard to believe it's the same coop! I keep elbowing my husband saying "I told you it would be awesome!" lol Now to finish the roof, the inside and get the runs on!

Hey all.. we are North of Milford MI and have a young flock of 3 barred rocks (2 pullets and a roo) and went for feed and brought home 2 ISA Browns So 5 in all and still working on getting our coop built! The warmer weather meant we can move the chicks from the finished basement to the garage. They free range in the landscaping while we play outside and tonight around dusk they all found their way back to their garage crate without prodding. Pretty cool. Really dig our chicken family!

love the chick on the cat. our cat is good with the big girls but I would not trust her with chicks. she loves to hunt to much

buy the time I get home from work, eat,clean up the kitchen. move the meat tractors and spray down their poo, set the coon trap, only catch them if I put What ever is the bait for the day in a tin can with lid pushed in, get all the coops locked down. (those Freedom Rangers don't want to go in, till dark) it is almost 10 and way past my bed time(getting to old to stay up till 11 and get up at 5) still trying to get the garden in

Good morning Opa. It is nice to see you are back. I missed your quiet reflections and sage advice while you were gone visiting, as I am sure others have as well.

There is no quiet here this morning. Major thunderstorm have made the sky as dark as midnight. So much needed though that I am not going to complain. Just hope that tomorrow's forecast holds the rain and storms off until the VFW's Memorial Day service has concluded. All of the flags flying, the bag pipes playing, the bells being rung provide for a beautiful shared reminder of the sacrifice so many have given in the past, and still continue to provide for the liberties we have today.

So sorry to hear about the predators and devastation it caused. It is pretty timely for me though, as I was going to put out some questions on exterior predator control. My DH is planning on installing an electric fence. I also want to put wire/poultry netting at the bottom of the run and angled down in the ground (this is what you are calling an apron?). We have very sandy soil though, and it is very easy to dig, so wondering if anyone else has the same conditions, what they use or do???

So true! Really age determines so little, the attitude is what counts.

We went to the fireworks last night. Very nice and Mackinaw was calm, nothing like 4th of July. It looks like rain here this morning, we really need it. I have someone coming this afternoon who is considering taking on Yeti, the blind chicken. I plan to play devil's advocate on what her care will be. I want someone who is committed to caring for her and knows going in what is involved.
