Chicken wire serves only one purpose. It hold chickens in but is an ineffective barrier for anything else.
So sorry to hear about the predators and devastation it caused. It is pretty timely for me though, as I was going to put out some questions on exterior predator control. My DH is planning on installing an electric fence. I also want to put wire/poultry netting at the bottom of the run and angled down in the ground (this is what you are calling an apron?). We have very sandy soil though, and it is very easy to dig, so wondering if anyone else has the same conditions, what they use or do???
Apparently, it is also a good toad catcher as well....
Fuzzy, why don't you try an antibiotic? There is sure to be some at the feed store or local vet on Tuesday.Ironic, since i have successfully helped others through providing links to helpful info, but my bumblefoot case is not responding to treatment. I am tired, and desperate, so i posted this in the emergency section.
The gist of it is that this wound is wanting to infect itself, and is festering despite everything i have done...... If any of you have any type of wound experience, i would appreciate any help i can get.

My girl is still full of spirit, but if she does die from this i'd at least like her foot to "heal" and get a scab at least.![]()
Thank you for the information Opa. I have seen the Night Eyes product, but my DH said that as long as it is not moved, the predators will get used to it and eventually ignore it. How have your neighbors results been with the red Christmas lights? We already have the electric fencing for the horses and are pretty familiar with its uses, drawbacks, installation and care. I have been using the high tensile fencing wire to run thru the edge of the poultry netting inside the coop to provide reinforcement and strength. It seems to have made the netting much more stable, and the high tensile wire is very hard to bend. When fastened (using a ton of staples with an air compressor), it is highly unlikely that anything is going in under the edge. I will try to take some pics today. Afterall, a pic is worth a thousand words, and few take the time to read those posts!I would recommend placing a hot wire about 6 inches off the ground and another at 24". Unless you use an extremely powerful charger called a "weed burner" you will need to insure the stays weed and grass free as that can cause the unit to ground out and not be effective.
.
Chicken wire serves only one purpose. It hold chickens in but is an ineffective barrier for anything else. Raccoons can create an opening in it in about the length of time it took me to type this. Hardware cloth is a much more effective barrier but it does tend to get expensive.
I have a friend that has placed red xmas bulbs 8" off the ground at several locations around the perimeter of his run. The theory being that predators think it is the eyes of something bigger than they are. There is a commercial variation of this concept call Night Eyes.
I feel the best deterrent is to eliminate the predators with regular trapping. I use a trap made by Duke called a dog proof coon trap and with it you will not be catching your neighbors cat of have to worry about your dog getting nailed.
That's funny. My GR did a good bit of sitting during the process.I have a Golden that needs to be shaved BADDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD. My groomer at work wont do it because my dog refuses to stand up. lol.
