Btw, it's only a half dozen till i get my own velocoraptor breeding program underfoot, lol.
I have a chick that may be a baby "basketball hen"!!!!!!!!! Unfortunately, she was an out of the shell rescue, so only time will tell whether she will live or not. Today was day 3, been on an every several hours feeding and today she is toddling around and cuddling her stuffie i gave her. I know, shouldn't have messed with nature. Didn't mean to, i was going to do an egg autopsy, and to my surprise i found one alive and with the air sac pipped. :O The hen had given up on setting, wanted to get out with her babies. Was playing football with the egg, when i candled there was no movement! I waited to post until i was a little more sure, she is beautiful!
Yes, mine are totally lap pets, named and cried over. We keep ours on DH's family property, where we do our "farm stuff" until we get a real home. He let me start with chickens because i have kept parakeets my whole life, but we can't have them in this apartment.

So mine are as dear to me as a kid or a dog.
But i don't heat in the winter, just use a heated dog bowl for water when i can. Nothing will make you sick quicker than going from a super heated place to a super cold one, we don't even use a ton of heat in the house since we are outside a lot in the winter too. Same for them, too. Just keep a draft free place with up top ventillation, perhaps some nice windows for winter light, and morning sun rays.
