I have NEVER in my life experienced the coons I have this year. Usually just a few but this year, wow.
I believe there is still more out there. They like to get in my sheep barn and knock everything over.

Olive - You have alpaca's? is this recent? I don't remember you ever talking about them. Where do you sell their fleece? (not like I need any really....I have 10lbs at the fiber mill being washed, and dyed) I just haven't worked with alpaca fiber yet.

DH has decided that we *must* go camping this summer. I want to go to the zoo in Detroit. So, does anyone know of a nice campground (tenting, no camper/5th-wheel here) that's withing 45min of the zoo? (One with a pool would be a big plus.)

Is this one you got from me? Looks like one of mine Without seeing the tail feathers I don't know for sure...but I'm also guessing Rooster. It's sometimes hard on these guys though. The body posture (sp?) of the girls is just as upright as the boys. Is the comb a pale pink or redish? I'll have to get a good shot of my lil' Reggie the rooster...he's 100% boy!


Nope, they get the white on thier chest and as their feathers come in they lose all the white on thier chest for speckles all over thier body. Like I said above you can't tell by body posture...you have to go by the color of the comb for the most part. If it's a pale pink and relatively short (like up and down...not tip to tip) it's a pullet. I'll try to snap a picture of a young pullet and a young cockerel for you guys.

Yep, I will post pic's again when IT is older. Comb is pale pink right now. What is it about the tail feathers I should look for?

Uchytil - Have a good visit, and do you mean you use the Poultry Protector to help prevent, or to treat established infestations? I don't know if yours do or not, but ours free range, so they don't spend a whole lot of time in coop or run. I have no idea how much that effects the viability of a treatment like Poultry Protector, but it seems like it would hamper things.

Here's what I (think) I know: Manna Pro makes the stuff (potassium sorbate) and you can get concentrate to dip birds or make a spray for maintenance. It's not as strong as some of the chemicals out there like permethrin, or whatever. Some people use sevin I think. You should just google Poultry Protector and that's a good way to read about it I guess. I see no reason that FR birds can't be treated.
