CRAP, CRAP CRAP. Lost 6 juvenile guineas to coons last night. The little idiots would not go in their **** pen. We had 2 Duke traps set up at the corners. Must have been more than one coon because there are 5 bodies missing. One coon in a trap. That sucker is DEAD. I wish the guineas setting would hatch something but I think they're clueless, they've been setting for 2 months now and nothing. I've got 11 left. No matter how frustrating and scratched up I get the rest have to into their pen tonight. DH is also going to set a kill trap on the roof.

I am so sorry! I probably shouldn't say this but with everyone having problems with predators, we are very lucky we have NEVER had a problem with any! I hope you're able to get everyone inside tonight!

What constitutes a good cup of coffee is a topic in the same category as religion or politics; everyone has their own opinion. Personally I use a Bunn coffeemaker and really like the fact that it prepares a good pot of coffee in record time. However, from a nostalgic perspective I miss the whole of experience of percolating coffee. The anticipation builds in a crescendo of your senses. Sight, sound, smell all are tantalized by the brewing experience. My own grind of choice is Folgers Black Silk since I prefer a dark roast full bodied coffee. A fact that many aren't aware of is that the dark roast coffees while having a richer stronger coffee flavor actually have less caffeine. The longer roasting process cooks it off.

Day 5 in the latest round of the "Raccoon War" has resulted in yet another of the annoying critters earning my assistance in shuffling off this mortal coil. I no longer bother with setting any of my live traps and have been using the Duke dog proof traps exclusively. Unfortunately I am down to only 2 so yesterday I ordered 2 more traps from Coon Collector. Same basic idea of a dog proof trap but with a slightly different holding mechanism. According to the manufacturer it is less painful and as a result there is less trap circle. It will be interesting to see if it lives up to their claims.

I 2nd you on the percolator! Somewhere I have my grandma's and I remember as a kid that thing brewing and even then I loved the sound and smell. I do adore my new fancy coffeemaker that brews a whole pot in 8 minutes but sometimes the old fashioned one is better.

One of the more effective coon traps that can and MUST be placed high is a bucket trap using a 220 conibear.

One of the more effective coon traps that can and MUST be placed high is a bucket trap using a 220 conibear.

I never used buckets, just large roofing nails to hold the trap, and massive staples to hold the chain. You put the bait above the trap on a leaning section so when the coon is caught they fall and hang. Sticks placed on the sides of the 200 northwoods, or 220 conibear keep the coons from crawling around the trap. The leaning tree also prevents the coon from going up the backside. This set works well for Fisher, Martin, and coons.

Let us know what you think of those traps once you use them. But for now we also have declared war. DH is telling me all our options. And he has conibears. He'll be bringing home several items from hunting camp today and setting up a perimeter.

I first got "regular" ducks because I had no desire whatsoever to have chickens. Can't remember my exact thoughts but it came out something like "I hate chickens". Then it turned out DH was allergic to duck eggs and by that time I liked the idea of fresh eggs. And voila, now I have chickens. Of course, every so often (okay once so far, last year) I get fed up and get rid of the whole bunch. But now I've got more though waiting on the egg laying is getting a little old. Still don't want any uggos though. Unless they can put fear into the heart of a coon.

Contrary to my membership on this forum, I don't even like most regular chickens. In fact, most chickens straight up repulse me. If it weren't for eggs I wouldn't keep them at all.

Can't really imagine Uggos will be any different. They're still dust and poo machines, just in an uglier package.

WOW! I've never heard of anyone being allergic to duck eggs. Chicken eggs, yes. Almost all of our duck egg customers buy them because they're allergic to dairy/chicken eggs.

I'm a duck addict. No, seriously. Yes, they're extremely messy and noisy but I don't care. Neither does my neighbor. He spoils them just as much as I do! Chickens aren't as much my thing as they are my boyfriend's so it works out.
