I'm feeling like I may have come across the wrong way... I was not in any way trying to criticize you for not enjoying cooking! I was just saying that I would punch anyone in the eye who called me Suzy Homemaker simply for cooking.

No, I'm good. Just don't like cooking is all.

If it's not simple I can't do it. My sister now is another story though. She can take scraps and make a gourmet (sp?) meal from them. Mom taught her how to cook. I was always out playing football or baseball or something.

OOOH WHAT ARE UGGOS ? Hatching eggs? For free? That's impossible T___T
Uggos are anything Naked Neck that is beautiful to some and UGLY to others
Olive would also classify anything frizzled to be an uggo
Mom2 hates barred rocks... for all the zebra stripes, but she loves the uggo!
I dunno... it is personal preference

If you are ever looking for free hatching eggs and don't mind mutts I'll give you some. I'm not too far away (in Macomb). The rooster is a Silkie. Hens laying at the moment are Marans, Polish, Bantam Cochin mix, Frizzle and soon to have Serama eggs.

I do? Wait, I don't even remember posting food here, have I?!
I consider your fruit popsicle both food and sneaky! My food tastes good, but sometimes my presentation is a tad lacking. Not that it looks terrible, but just don't "pop". :( But i recognize the art when i see it, lol.

I'm in need of help.

I have 6 RIR hens and for the most part we are getting between 3-5 eggs a day. Today I had to work 12 hours so wasn't around much. I did get 3 hard shelled eggs before I left. Well tonight I went to go put them into the coop (another problem-not all going in) :). I found 3 soft shelled eggs 1 on the ladder, one by the floor of the ladder and one near the ladder. One was broke but looked like nobody was eating it. They are on layer feed (pellets) and I've also given them some crushed oyster the other day. I do give them lots of garden scraps and I'm wondering if that is what is causing it?? I was shocked to find 3 because they almost always lay in the nesting boxes and I've not ever had 6 in one day. However, I've been finding one just outside the box the last few days. (but still inside the coop) The water was changed about 5ish but they didn't notice any eggs. But in all honesty they could have been there and he just didn't notice.

They are 4 months and a few days old.

Can someone educate me on what causes soft shells besides lack of calcium? Or do I need to give them more than layer plus a bowl here and there. Is it too many treats? Too many garden scraps? Any suggestions?

Thanks so much for your help.

Belle Mai was the off spring of Roger and Buffy, who was killed by a hawk.
What? When did that happen and why don't I remember reading about it? I always thought that she had such a pretty name. Sorry you lost her.

Had a pretty quiet chicken day. I was happy to see it rained last night. Not only is our garden flourishing from it (we have cukes and zukes coming out our ears), but I love watching the chickens scratching around after it's rained.

I wouldn't worry too much. Your hens are young and hiccups happen. Things like soft shell and double yolk seem to occur more with new layers.

Off the top of my head, calcium needs some phosphorus to help build shell strength. I need to double check my notes. Chemistry and nutrient cycling are not my strong points but I know where to look.

So how does a feed recall actually work? I bought a bag of Layena a few days ago and transferred it to a metal container and tossed the bag. How would I ever return the feed for a refund?

Personally, I'm not worried about my hens as I give them a wide variety of food and they are outside all day long. The bag of Layena I bought was the first time I ever tried it.

Chicken Grandma... Just so you know, I was very tempted to pick on you. BUT, I won't hehee. SO YOU DECIDED TO TORTURE ME INSTEAD WITH ALL THESE QUOTES!!!!

LOL!!!!

I should say not. Both my boys are half-ers. My ex hubby is also Hispanic. Good hard working family, they are not takers. They've worked hard for everything, good church going people.
Thats funny. Mama hens are wicked awesome funny.
Should have stopped in sooner. Not only are we awesome, I bet we could hook you up with hatching eggs... Or Mom2's famous uggos.
Healing very well. The part closest to the thumb is only like a scratch now. The part that is stitched and just below, its healing, a bit red today, so will probably put a water proof bandage on it for a few hours, and then clean it with alcohol and more dermoplast antibiotic.
One of the silkie eggs that is developing was in the fridge for several days.... As long as they haven't been fridged for several weeks, they should have a more successful hatch.
Oh, I won't throw it out right away... I will let them eat at it, for a day, and hope they get it all cleared up, including taking off the part that stores the feed, and just leave it like a big wet food cake feed tower... LOL. BUT if they don't, then I have to dispose of it. I have 3 feeders out for everyone, and then one for the bitty birds. Can turn into a lot of wasted feed if I am not on it.
Oh, you mean like when my touch pad changes cockerels to effers, but the real spelling and does not catch it? Yeah... funny that.
Best call first. Sister is supposed to be out of the hospital that day, so, may be a bit on the busy side. ALSO, got a new number, so I'll PM you later. I didn't bother renewing the contract with sprint. $70 a month was just to much, and then the charges... WHEN I could get a pay as I go for 45! No contract. Jerks.
