[chicken grandma]

I have been lurking. This thread is so difficult to keep up with! I finally got my brooder cabinets done....inspired by hillbilly hens. Eggs are in the incubator, but only have 12 out of 60 developing. Hot weather during shipment zapped them I think. In my " grand plan" I also thought I would have the coop and run done by now... Ha ha. Hoping to work on the coop next week. I learn a lot from your stories! Hope to have pictures of my own to share soon.

I put the birds away last night having never heard a crow from Mr. F all day. This morning when he did not come out again, I was worried. I looked in he was not there, I looked under, and there he was, standing up! Sweet. I went to get some feed for the tinies and ERRRR-RRRR-RRRRRARRRRRR! Loud and clear. It is pretty messed up when a crow can nearly bring you to tears.

Nothing wrong with appreciating God's blessings. Even if they come in the form of chickens!

I adored my chickens and hated to lose them to illness and predators. I am always glad when one pulls through!

don't you love it when they try to help

...when my grand son was about 2or3 he wanted to help mommy with the laundry and put bleach in the machine.....to this day (he is 24) I don't think she buys bleach

as for the cocci, I understand most birds have it as it is in the ground ect.... but it is hard to know when to treat if they show no sign of blood, and when they do it may be to late...I think that is why a lot of farmers treat every spring regardless

I would not use pellets...poison......we had mice in the basement once.... when we cleaned it out I found D-con every were, in old shirt pockets, in the cat litter even under and old rug.....they will move it and chickens could get a hold of it......if at all possible set traps up high or in a box or behind things chicks can not get at.....do not keep food in the coop, (it will stay cleaner as the chicks will be out were the food is) you may however have a bird as in sparrow problem,coming in to eat the feed, need to put bird netting all around ,then they fly in the door if that is open for hens to come in and out,,,can't win there but please do not take the chance of poisoning them

QUESTION,,,one of my hens is sick,, But I know what the problem is ...so she is 4yrs, plus. and last night she had been in the nest box a long time and when I picked her up there was raw egg so now I know one that has been laying soft and shell-less eggs, I soaked her bottom in epsomsalts,hot water,she is still not looking herself today so I thought I should give her some antibiotics, I have Tetracyclie on hand do you think that would work?I also noticed a small scab (bumble) on the bottom of her foot, treating that to,

Let me get this clear. We use the ones where the mice can't get back out. We put them in the rafters and outside along the sides of the barn where chickens can't get to them. We don't lay poison around where chicken can get to it, we're not that ridiculous!

Cocci is not just in the ground. All animals and birds are born or hatched with it in their body already. When stressful situations come up then they shed it. This was told to me from 3 different vets that have no connection with each other. I treat my sheep 2 times a year for it as a preventative measure.

On the mouse thing I think I will do as Olive and Fuzzy says. I would NEVER put poison out. Too many animals around here to do that. But I cannot keep feed up because they are in an enclosed building with lots of space for them. So it is immposible to keep the food up and also them eat. They are not old enough to go in a run yet.

X2 Thanks for your input Keyt. I just don't know what to do but I do know when I open their door in the mornings I can smell the mice and I can't stand that smell. I am going to clean it out AGAIN when I feel better. I don't feel good today so I am staying inside a lot. Probably tomorrow I will clean it again.
I got to meet BobBry this morning. He is a real nice fella. I liked him.

Boil eggs (duck, chicken, peafowl, whatever you have except emu eggs, they are too big!)
I used duck eggs because I had them

1 pound of ground meat (your favourite kind - mine was 3/4 chicken thigh and 1/4 pork)
1 tsp salt, 1/2 tsp ground sage, 2-10 (okay, I love garlic) crushed garlic cloves, 10 grinds of black pepper, 1/2 tsp dried mustard powder (optional). Mix it all together - if it seems a bit moist, add 1/4 - 1/2 cup breadcrumbs to bind it.

Divide into 4 portions. Rolling it our can be a pain, so I use cling film, with flour on it and put another piece on top. Then "shmush" it round the boiled eggs that have been chilled. Form into a nice ball pressing it tight, then roll in breadcrumbs. Fry in hot oil in a cast iron pan until brown on all sides, then drain any excess oil, and transfer the pan to a 325 f oven for 25 minutes to make sure it's thoroughly cooked.

Serve chilled with Dijon or HOT English mustard and a big pint of the very best beer!

OK... so general consensus is to dump the eggs. So darn conflicting! LOL. I guess I will go and look at the drug in question first and decided from there. I can mark the boxes they go in, and may decided that they are fine for myself and John to eat, but feed the store eggs (BLAAA!) to the kiddos and ma. We will see.

Mice... I just chucked several dead mice from my front yard. I have a wonderful summer out door cat. She'll chase the mice down, and kill em... then leave them all over the yard. The chickens... they don't even bother with them when they are dead. Just walk around them. I guess they like their meat fresh or cooked. HAHAHAAAHAA. Picky chits.

Mr. Fluffers is hanging out under the bushes where they always hang out. He is still very under the weather, but he will not let me catch him. He is getting up on his own to eat and drink, so this is a good sign. Yesterday I really did think I'd be burying him today. I am not sure if its the antibiotics, but I do think that poultry drench is one hell of a chicken life saver. I wonder if I had had it when Vanna suddenly got ill and when the unnamed pullet got ill, if that would have helped them. Also... the sav a chick sure didn't work. Well anyway. I will continue to keep my fingers crossed that the big galoot recovers completely. I know some people think that I am a nut for carrying about my roo so much, and some are not. BUT any rooster who is gonna take on a juvie coon, be so good to his girls, and keep the flock managed as well as he does, well hell, then he deserves the best that I can do for him also. AND he never threatens people, or my kids. That makes him a roo with traits that are worth passing down. Like I said, how lucky I have been to have good boys.

My hose broke... I hope it rains. I guess tomorrow I will have to get a hose repair kit, OR I will have to get a new hose. I can't water my veggies adequately right now. UGH!

I picked a cucumber off the vine... It was a very weird color. Very solid, but the green was off, and some of the areas looked a bit rusty (?) colored in with the green. The cucumber was also very thick around, but about 6-7 inches long. I should have taken a picture of it. The chickens have already devoured it. Anyway... Is there anything wrong with it? It did not seem to be rotting at all. I used to work at Heinz, and it had that color going on, like it was rotting, but again it was very firm, even in the rusty colored spots.

Some one picked my watermelon too. Butt clowns. I asked around at work last night. Trying to find someone who needs some free wood for the winter, to take down the trees. All they have to do, is drop them straight back. They would not have to worry about hitting anything with the ones I want out. It would give me the minimum amount of sun needed then in the back. Looks like I may have found someone. When would be the best time to take them out? I was thinking in the fall, so that the birds wouldn't be disturbed. I'd hate to take out a bird nest. The squirrels are smart enough to not nest in the trees in the yard. Dogs. LOL. BUT that is good news for me.

Anyway, my plantar fascitis is really bothering my foot. I think I will go and put it up, maybe roll it over an bottle of ice for 15 minutes...

You have quail ??? Do they eat anything special ? I am getting some Snowflake Bob Whites next weekend and was wondering what they eat. I planned on giving them game bird feed. Is there anything else they need ?

I fed mine turkey start... that is what I was told to feed them. By the lady that hatched them.

I used the full amount of salt, but the smaller amount of liquid. It was hard to get it on the legs, so I smoothed in on like I was doing drywall mud! I did add a tiny bit of dry mustard powder (because it's got a horseradishy taste which i really like). The texture was fabulous and it cooked so nice and crispy. A total keeper
