Micro Farm DUCK HUT Worklog

galgo98; sounds like you've got everything under control then.. And some good cheap sources for stuff. Will be looking forward to seeing how your roof turns out.

Well the duck hut is together to the point that I don't worry much about the ducks inside. I still have to finish the green roof though and to trim it out. But, I've moved onto the run panels. I've got 8 panels framed and ready for paint. All of which are 39" tall and 8'-3" long. They'll be attached along to the current chicken run panels as well, giving a grand total of 448 square foot for the ducks. I figure once I thin the flock, it'll be 50-60SF of run space per duck then.

At any rate, here are some shoddy pictures of the panels on the basement floor drying after being put together.

All glued, screwed and racked to dry. Had a problem with them being glued together.. Sooooo... Knocked the pile a bit and made sure they weren't sitting together that much.

Bulk of the panels are held together with 3" long screws counter sunk into the sides and whatnot. The nailer was for the cross braces which were glued and tacked into position.

Top most panel is the gate panel. I've got it set for a 36" wide gate to be put in place.

This is by far my fave pair of gloves, though I just wear the right one. Use it all the time for framing or work which is hard on the hands.

i believe the mess they caused you before you made this luxurious home for them. they should be the two happiest pekins around.

Oh, it's not the two Pekins that are any issue at this point. It's the 11 little WH ducklings.

They are such a huge sloppy mess in the chicken coop that we're now overrun with flies.

I borrowed this idea and painted it red. The ducks love it. We drilled a small hold at the top to install a light. It's easy to clean. Also pretty easy to move with some handles on it. I raised 10 ducks in it. I even put my feed bags in one side so it stays dry and access is easy. I will have to post a picture of it for you. But I love it! We did modify it a bit. But not much. We used tin from a blown down shed for the roof and it has been dubbed the "Duck Barn" Thanks for idea.

I also borrowed this idea with minor changes. I couldn't figure out how to make the side roofs hinged while keeping them water proof so I just build a larger door in the back that I can get in and out of...won't be the most comfrortable but I'll survive. Also changed the roof to a single sloped roof (front to back) because it was easier for me to build and matched the human home. Other than that great house, lots of space and very sturdy. Ducklings are only a week old but I'm thinking about hanging the lamp inside it and letting them move in rather than in my makeshift brooder...we'll see.
