MicroChips work

My cat is definitely chipped. It cost me $30 to get her HomeAgain chipped at her old vet (I saw that at the new vet it costs around 50$). A $30 microchip is the same cost as an annual rabies vaccination, and you only need to do it ONCE in her lifetime. Well worth it. She is an indoor only cat.

Something else I have done with my dogs is have ID tags made with their microchip numbers on them, just in case wherever they end up doesn't have a scanner, or the right kind of scanner, or if for whatever reason it's not readable...

Also, it immediately lets someone know the dog has a microchip, in case the finder wouldn't think of that right away...

Our clinic charges $15 to chip, but I have not had it done. I think having the tag w/ the info is a great idea!

I'm generally more worried my pet will be taken then I am about them taking off on their own, and if someone steals them I can't imagine them checking for a chip.

I hear ya there. My dogs took off 2 years ago...my border collie came back on her own, but my Papillon didn't - I thought for sure he was coyote bait when she came back alone. Then on the morning of the 3rd day, I got a phone call from someone that had seen my signs and had seen a "found dog" sign a couple miles away. I went to the metal shop where the signs were, and they had him. They didn't bother to check for a microchip, they were fighting over who was going to keep him!! I had the microchip tags made the next day. I am grateful that they took care of him for me, but still made me wanna

them upside the heads and ask how they would feel if someone found their dog (who was obviously well taken care of) and just kept him instead of trying to find it's owners!

Thanks so much for posting this! They are going to be near me soon. I'm going to try to get my two little dogs that haven't been chipped yet done while they are in the area.

So glad to hear this! For regular vaccines, there's another mobile vet too, but they don't do microchipping. They do travel more of the state though.

yes they do...

I microchiped my puppies before they even went to their new homes. I think this is a good practice that all breeders should implement in their breeding program.

You're right, someone who steals a pet isn't going to check them for a chip. However, many vets now automatically scan any new pets coming into their clinic/ I know the one I work for asks if the pet is microchipped as part of the history they take during the initial exam, and regardless of the answer we scan the pet to make sure they really don't have a chip or to make sure that the microchip number matches the number that the owner has for that animal (if they have a number...we also like to put the microchip number in our computer as part of the animal's identifying information).

More importantly, if you find your animal and the person who has it claims that it is theirs a microchip provides irrefutable legal PROOF that the animal is YOURS. You can call the authorities and insist that they scan the animal to prove that it is not your stolen animal.

This!

I don't think there's a person on this earth that is brave enough to steal our older GSD Jax. What good would having a dog do them when the person has huge chunks of their body missing?

I also don't expect either of our dogs to get lost, but it's nice to know that our vet has their chip #s in their charts.
