Mid January Hatch thread....

Quick question, I'm about 8 days into my 1st incubation ever. I got shipped eggs and have been tossing the eggs that were obviously duds. But I've got a couple that I'm unsure about and I'm not sure what to do or how long I can leave them before they explode and contaminate my others? Or what should I most definitely be seeing by now? Any good pics of what I should be looking at and what's definitely not good? And the ones that the air sac looks to be moving around, those are no good right?

This prolly won't help much but I had eggs with rolling Aircells that would litterally run under the egg shell the full length of the egg if I turned it but I could SEE an embryo in there as the time got closer everything looked good except these wonky air cells. SO we put the pointy end down or little end down in an egg carton with the bottom cut out so they can breathe and they hatched! I have those babies now...one didnt make it since it pipped on the small end sitting them in cartons helps the Air cell stay put! you should definatly see viens and maybe a chick shadow with an eye visable when you candle lemme see if I can find a pic...
This was at day 7 I believe...Early anyway the dark spot you can see is the eye!Very cool! HOPE this helps!

Update....

Finally went to bed at 10:00, couldn't stay awake any longer. I had just witnessed number 7 be born, and he was one I was worried about, so I went to sleep. Woke up at 4:00 to check on them, and I had 10 more! And I have 3 more pips! I was hoping for a 30% hatch rate, because they are shipped eggs that came so far in the cold and I'm brand new to this...guess it worked much better than that!! Once again, a BIG THANK YOU to Hot2Pot for knowing her stuff with packing!!!

I will upload a picture as soon as I have a little more coffee in me lol

And I'm not sure what these two little cuties are... also GLW?

Wow, that's a great hatch rate so far, congratulations!!!!! They are so adorable!

Your two known chicks definitely look like GLW.

Thank you :) I thought so too, but they are just sooo much darker than the others, and have virtually no striping on their bodies, so I thought maybe Hot2Pot threw in a surprise or two lol

... and another was just hatched, so I have 17 now, one more pip, and another has zipped... I never expected to get half that amount with the eggs traveling all the way up here!!!

My 23 eggs started hatching on Friday, day 19! As of today, I have 12 live peeps, 3 that died in shell after opening a hole and I think the rest are duds, but I'm going to give them until Monday or Tuesday. I'm so surprised that they ended up all the same color - yellow/tan, some with brown spots on the head and some without. Does the rooster have that much say on what the chick is going to be like? I have an EE roo with GLW, SLW, BO, EE and Brahma hens. I don't think any of the Brahma eggs hatched, tho.

Oh, they are so cute!!!

I don't know that the rooster's genetics are any stronger. I do think maybe some characteristics are stronger than others.

I hatched some eggs over the summer that was BCM roo over EE hens. All four looked exactly like a BCM, except a couple had beards. It was a really cool combination.

Out of the 4 call duck eggs I had left, 3 hatched, one one on Fri, one Sat & the last little cutie hatched today. I don't know what kind they are, just that I think they are super cute.
