Hi,

I'm not usualy over here, but my wife saw some Midget Whites and wants to get some.

I have some "make or break" questions.

Are the Toms loud? Do they do a turket version of crowing in the morning like roosters?

Woul they get along with my flock of 11 standard chickens?

Could they live in the same coop with the chickens?

Do they require anything special?

Thanx,

David

Hello David,
No turkeys do not have the same crow as a rooster every morning, noon and night. We raise our turkeys with chickens in the same pen. They really do not require anything special. Just keep the poults dry and clean. Our turkeys do call back and forth to each other. They also gobble at loud noices, like trucks going down the road and low flying airplanes.
The Midgets are very friendly turkeys and are wonderful tasting, if you are going that route. They will go broody and sit, hatch and raise their young.
They also lay a huge egg for their size.

Thanx for the information. Nice web-site.

I now have to locate a breeder close to me.

Thanx again,

David

My turkeys will gobble in response to the chicken crowing which also sets the geese off so the COMBINED noise can be a little much sometimes but the turks by themselves are definitely not as noisy as the roosters crowing and the girlies bawk bawking about having laid an egg.
And I gotta tell you that of the turks I have the Midget is the friendliest although they're all very friendly.

I'm convinced about the wonderfulness of turkeys and the Midget Whte.

Now I'm trying to locate a breeder in Illinois. I don't want to hatch the eggs, I would prefer started birds or chicks.

"girlies"

I like that.

Thanx again,

David

Good luck with your search. You can try the ALBC and see if they will give you any names of breeders in your area. Sometimes they will or you can join the ALBC and they will send you out a breeders directory on all the rare birds.
Just remember that not all small white turkeys are Midget Whites. Good luck again.

By the way, my BR turkeys can be loud at times, very loud. If you want a quiet bird, I don't think turkeys will be quiet.

Loudest is when my hens see something strange (like a new person or a new/strange turkey) or when they are looking for each other (if one went to bed in the tree and the others are in the coop). The tree turkey will run around yelping her head off (my sunrise alarm clock) until I open the coop door.

I have a Midget white in with my chickens. I had 3 at one time. Lost 2 to blackhead and now treating the third for blackhead. She is loud in the morning and this is since she started to have blackhead or it's because she is alone now. Not sure but she squawks all morning. after having this bad experience with Blackhead I would not recommend keeping chickens and turkeys together. Perhaps someone else has a different experience but out of 3 of my Midget whites only one is left and the death from Blackhead is not pretty to watch. Plus she is noisy every morning.
