Midlife sucks, so I got chickens...

A quick update of my growing girls...just because. Here is my very camera shy PBR Pepper:

That's Henry(etta) above. I have been concerned that she was a he, but if my BYC research is correct, that is a single pea comb=hen. She and her sisters are 5 weeks old today.

Hello fellow crazy chicken ladies and gents!

My chicken story. I'll try to keep it short ;)

So I got the bright idea I needed chickens. I think it's all part of this midlife nonsense that's going on. (When you are 40-something,have 3 kids ages 10,8 and almost 7 that act surprised twice a day, everyday, when you ask if they have brushed their teeth and their response is "but you didn't tell me to!?" Everyday. Every morning. Every evening. *sigh*

I decided to order 3 chicky ladies from an online site and paid a nice chunk for "special packaging" for having an order less than 15. What arrive was 6 chicks with a little notice on the bottom of the receipt: you may notice an extra chick in case of loss in transit. I noticed 3 extra chicks...ut oh. All survived. And are currently living in a dog coop in my basement. View attachment 1412040
2 Plymouth Rocks, 2 Easter Eggers and 2 Speckled Sussex. SO CUTE!

So now I need to build the coop. Opps. I might have done that backwards. Anyway, I haven't built anything since 8th grade wood shop. My husband is very handy and has lots of toys tools. The best part? He actually allowed me to use them! Nothing like a circular saw ripping through lumber to get over a dull day! I have to say I am quite proud of myself. I did 98% of the planning and 90% of the building (hubs helped with framing for the roof). I still have a few details left but the coop is done and the run just needs a door. The girls are 3.5 weeks old now. One of the Easter Eggers is suspicious for a rooster. It has a very LLOONNGG neck, thick legs and showy strut. Who knows. I am a first time chicky momma. But it's fun to try and guess. :D Here s/he is at 2 weeks: View attachment 1412065 View attachment 1412066
and almost 4 weeks: View attachment 1412076 View attachment 1412077 View attachment 1412068
Any guesses?
Here are the other 5: Rue and Pepper:

These ladies are super sweet, friendly and curious.
Here is the other Easter Egger: Angel. My daughter named her. She was a fuzzy fluff of yellow when we first got her at 2 days old. View attachment 1412100
She and "Henry/Harriot" Easter Egger are both shy with people.
Geode and Ginger the speckled Sussex are very active, curious, and difficult to get a good picture of, especially when outside. There is just too much to do!View attachment 1412099 View attachment 1412092
And if I haven't bored you to tears and you are still with me here's the whole gang at 2 weeks old: View attachment 1412083
