I have a 4 week old Midnight majesty maran. It was purchased as a pullet, but I suspect it is a cockerel. It comes from Hoover Hatchery, purchased at a local store. I have never owned a Maran of any kind before and can’t find much information or pictures anywhere. It says on Hoover’s site that makes are barred, which this chick appears to be. Also, he is bigger and heavier and has a pretty good sized comb. Anyone have experience with these to know for certain?

4 weeks is still a little early, but that wattle is developing pretty quickly! My guess right now is a cockerel. Report pix in 2 more weeks for confirmation.
Best wishes and be well! ❤️

Okay. I will check back. Thanks!
It should be a sex link from what I've seen, black females and barred males. So your chick would be a cockerel.
That’s my concern. Such a bummer!

I checked the MT Healthy Hatchery website. If true, you have a cockerel. It is a sex linked breed cockerels are barred. :(

@Cinderblock I have had Marans for quite some time and have never heard of a Midnight Majesty Marans. There are Marans that are barred. His comb and waddles scream cockerel, Marans are usually fairly large birds.
The males usually make good providers and protectors. And if raised properly will respect people. Are his Feet fathered?

Hoover hatchery sells them. They are a hybrid meant for egg production , better than a true Marans. Sex linked , egg production will not breed true.
