I heard this on NPR today. The guy suicided and turned the animals loose first. The policeman interviewed on ATC said they had over 35 calls to the place, and had expected a tragic call for a long time. What they expected was that an animal would get loose and maul someone or that the owner would get mauled. He said Ohio had lax laws on exotic animals, and that there wasn't a whole lot the police could have done.
It also sounds like they were doing a lot of the hunting after dark. I wouldn't like to meet a habituated hungry tiger in the dark.
Dead and Buried-
1 Wolf
6 Black Bears
2 Grizzly Bears
9 Lions
8 Lionesses
1 Baboon
3 Mountain Lions
18 Bengal Tigers
Not yet Captured-
1 Wolf
1 Macaque (monkey)
Only 6 animals were able to be captured and transfered to the zoo (3 primates, 2 leopards, 1 grizzly bear)
I just want to clarify that some reports online are getting it wrong by saying that this man had cheetahs. Cheetahs are critically endangered and are NOT found in ANY private collection (unless, of course, it's a black market deal).
I've worked at a large zoo and I understand both sides: the zoo mentality and the private owner mentality.
