I am not sure if these chicks may need help (still not looking to intervene today but maybe in the next few days?). I am wondering opinions of those more experienced. This is only my second time hatching eggs, both under a broody silkie.
I have 6 silkie eggs under a their mama on day 19 today but already one was piping bright and early this morning. Three are now currently pipped. I was doing the final candling yesterday and have had a suspicion since early on that these may come early. One was already through the internal membrane and actually looked to be farthest along as of yesterday, but is over 24 hours now and no external pip. I did give the chick a safety hole this morning and either that helped it or it was just tired and resting because now it is super loud (peeps were there but quieter earlier) and I can hear it tapping away again...maybe tapping for 6 hours now? Sounds very active but still no external pip.
Does it sound like he may be stuck? I did not see any blood vessels when candling yesterday, and his peep is very strong. At what point should I consider giving him a starting pip? I looked at the Guide to Assisting and did not see much mentioned about what to do if only an internal pip. I am hoping since he has his egg yolk he technically should be okay for up to a few days in there?
The article also says that zipping should only take about an hour before needing assistance. I have one egg that started zipping this morning (but looks like it might be going length-wise), but either way has stopped making progress. Is it really a bad sign that it still hasn't hatched? I seem to remember with my first hatch the first few chicks took from about sunrise (pip) to sunset or overnight to break out. A few did go pretty fast though, so I am not sure what is the norm.
We have good humidity here (Florida), and I prefer to be as hands off as possible but if it is a needed assist wouldn't mind helping along. I am assuming my eggs being day 19 may mean things could take a bit longer. If it matter their mom had only been laying 1.5-2 months and I don't think is up to full-sized eggs yet, which I didn't even think about possibly being a problem until the thought came last night. Any insights or tips are appreciated!
Thank
