Military personnel advice

Thank you all for the info. That is pretty much as I understood it to work, but I wanted to know what the differences were. It appears that if you are moving often Tri care prime works out best. but if you are in one place, staying put and off base with kids you might want to consider the other options.

He is active duty she is civilian and will be moving to follow him. She has no health problems, but all are anticipating a pregnancy sometime in the next couple of years. He did not have to enroll, but she certainly did. The paperwork (on-line) was a pain!

Aggie, that website was what we used.

How high are the odds of her getting on base housing?? That used to be an issue, but they're telling them it will be no problem at all.

Housing wait list times are MUCH better now than they were 15+ years ago. When I married DH we signed up for housing at a big installation, stayed there (renting off post) for almost four years and were still like #300 on the wait list when we got orders to move.

They revamped things (and housing went to privatized) and over the next 5-10 years things got much better. Depends on where they are stationed and how big that post is versus how many people want housing and how big of a place they need, but they should be able to get housing within a few months, I'd think, at the latest. Some places don't really have a wait list right now since so many are deployed and their family members went home, moving out of housing, so there are surplusses in some places right now. Since housing has become privatized those companies want the money, so they bust butt to get a house ready again as soon as possible after someone moves out, which works in their favor, too.
