I'll tell ya, I would be thrilled to have three hens. And I love the idea of the smokey look. Whatever happens, I am thrilled with these chicks... I just want to be able to keep most of them...

I have a Canon 40D and I used the 100mm macro lens for most of the pics and then I also used Photoshop to clean them up just a pinch but not much.

It's not easy taking pics of some of them (like the roo) because they WONT SIT STILL

Here are some other pics I took of my Trader Joe's chicks

I LOVE the pics... like the first one with the chick tucking its head and, of course, the black box shots via poulets de cajun

I have a nikon 5000d and love photographing the chickens and my kids. I am so glad I went for it. I've never been a gadget person.. buy my cell phones all 2nd hand for a few dollars but, this thing is incredible

I did the white box because I hatched so many dark chicks but I think Im going black next time regardless

I could use some comments on my six....3 week old MF chicks please. Purchased eggs here on BYC from Tate in Fl. and are beautiful to me. Any comments on sex/colors etc. is appreciated. I know they are young but am hoping for mostly hens.
TIA!

They'll tell you what they are in just a couple more weeks! ;-)

I've got a couple of Calico pullets that one would swear were cockerels but I know they're not. Their Mom has a prominant comb and wattles and many of her offspring do as well.

This is an eight week old PULLET! I was even doubting it myself and put her in the cockerel pen for a few minutes but it was SO obvious when I had her in with the boys that she is NOT a cockerel. Their combs (they are the same age) are MUCH larger and they are bigger than her as well.

I'm in the process of building a NEW website that features my Mille Fleur and Calico Cochins as well as my Shetland sheep. I've got photo albums of both the MFCs as well as the Calicos on the new website. I'll be adding more photos later today. I got some great shots of my Calico babies playing out in the back yard yesterday...

I'd appreciate any feedback!

Hi Nancy! I love reading about the adventures of Cracker Jack! It seems like he is having a great time on your farm. Makes me happy.

Thanks! Yes, Cracker Jack is quite the happy camper. So far, he's the sire of my "Flock Improvement" chicks. I had him in a breeding pen with a show quality black mottled hen and two extremely typey Buff Columbina hens and a show quality black hen. I'm just now hatching out their chicks. I'll cross those chicks back to my Calico or MF breeders and see what we get. :)

Here's CJ with his Calico girls:

and here he is making sure that the young BLRW know who's boss!

I put him in with the Calicos the first of this month, so it will be another week or so before I can be sure the eggs are sired by him. I can't wait to see what he produces! I'll be breeding Red's Calico pullets to CJ in a couple of months!

Gonna have lots of beutiful babies in the Bluff Country... :)
