Mille Cochin Info

Amy & Shylee,

Thanks so much for the vote of encouragement. Obviously we all know it is still a long road but I do see some light~!

Ember in the pic is good progress I've made in type. I'd improve her wing carriage as they tend toward weak, darken her base color to the orange vermillion and increase the black pattern. She is a year old on Thanksgiving which helps see her development.

Hey Stephanie, you always have such lovely birds.. but, you'll have to acquire a show quality typed bird like your splashes and blend them in to start seeing a big difference. If I were you and had such nice patterned birds of decent type, I would look for a super typed male next Spring and don't worry about his pattern at ALL.. just his type and his lineage.. (BCxmottled, etc.) and mix him in. Breed the offspring together and pick the best ones to put back to him.

I have some very cute Mille Fleur and Splash Cochin chicks hatched 10/31/11 that are re-listed for sale if anyone is interested in them . There are 7 splash and 5 Mille Fleur in this cute batch of chicks. Check them out and email me with any questions! Slainte' Ruth

Hi all! I am new to Cochins, and have 5 mille's that I hatched from eggs. They are 5 weeks, and so far all buff and black , only one has white feathers. I need to get more birds to breed to these, suggestions on colors I should get? Would breeding to a mottled help add white? Thank you in advance for ll your help! I have always loved chickens and am so excited about my new project, but I want to do it right and need all the help I can get.

I wouldn't hurry to make decisions about breeding "who to what" just yet. They will change so much. You will be constantly suprized.
My Millie pullets's colors change drastically untill they are about 5 to 6 mo. old and the roos take even longer than that. Then for another 6 mo. colors still can change, especially in the hackles.
