I was finally able to get out during the day and take some photos of the gorgeous starter flock!

Most of the birds:

One Cockerel. Has a nice tail, waiting to see how he develops. Not much of a cushion..but underdeveloped yet. I like his head so far:

Frizzled Mottled Blue Pullet

The recent pair! I think the one on the right is a cockerel, but if it is a pullet I will be triple excited. No real sex feathers yet, but some of them do look suspicious.

The pullet with Lil' Ropo in the background:

And, until someone upsurps him: The BIG MAN on Campus: The more I look at him, the more I come to like him.
I know these are young but I think you have a ways to go with them. We all have plenty to work on with our birds but at least you have some color and pattern going for you.
They need to mature more into their bums and hopefully they will get wider cushions later on as they mature. It may take another 3-4 months to know just how much they will give you in your breeding program but you have some birds to work with there. I would certainly keep an eye out for a few others that you can add and work into the program. I often breed back into the buff Columbian and everyone knows I breed into my Mottleds to enhance type, as well as pattern.
With these you have the MF pattern genes but in another few months let's see how they mature because you will need to know which direction to take them. I think they need more type bred into them but that is me.
I really fear the tail on the one you think may turn into a roo in photo 4 (it's a pullet, btw). I never want to see a point in the tail, cushion, bum of any of my bantam Cochins but so often certain bloodlines have them in youngsters and they mature out okay.

It is a start. Just remember when you look at them that you want a sort of basketball look. Many of them get heart shaped, which young birds are allowed to be in my breeding pens in some aspects but I want a mature bird to be more like a basketball.

Just my 2 cents and I look forward to watching them mature and change and give you fits just like the rest of us get from ours!

Right. I agree about them needing quite a bit of work. But, none of them have DQs. The tail on the one worries me as well, but the cushion is very nice when she stands correctly. I've seen a few suspect feathers on her. I will have to get some close ups of them. One of the males JUST started getting some sex feathers in. Otherwise, I would have sworn he was a female. This chick was even lower on the pecking order so I'm wondering if the secondary sex characteristics are going to be slow to enter the picture as well.

I will probably be keeping all of the birds until well after 9 months to see how they continue to grow. If I find a nice, typey Mottled bird in that time though... ;)

Thank you for the feedback!

Since I am new to this particular color, any idea how to get the black bars in and the full black feathers out? Should the birds with full black feathers be used to deepen the color?

Here is my new cockerel from Lynne who I'm very happy with. He still has some filling out to do but I love his dispostion and attitude with the hens. He doesn't fight with any of my my other mille roo's in with him. Like I said, I really like this boy. Introducing Geronimo!!!!!
