Nancy, how many eggs did you get from Candy and Splash? I was hoping that is what you were hatching so maybe you will have some to help you along! I hate to hear about Splash! My chickie prayers are with him.

I have eggs in the 'bator so there are a few of us hatching right now. Thank goodness!

We are a growing community and I think our little MFC will eventually take over the world! The poultry world anyhow.

Thank you all for the kind words of support! Splash is still hanging in there.
I'm going to go make him some more scrambled eggs for breakfast...

p.s. I've got 8 Candy/Splash eggs in the bator and have collected 2 more. I'm just not sure that they'll be fertil (at least the most recent ones) with Splash having been sick. I guess time will tell. I will be ecstatic if a few of those eggs hatch. I so think that the Candy/Splash pairing will give me beautiful babies.

Of course, I put "Trouble" in with Candy and Java now and he's certainly not any sort of 'step down' in the sire department...

I had intended to use Troube to produce the 'typical' MF pattern/color in my girls. I was actually hoping to get more of the white-background (what I'm calling "Candy Corn Cochins") from Candy and Splash. I do have a rooster that came with Candy that I may use in the future. I've just been letting him grow out a bit so that I can better access his quality and breeding value. He's looking good so he may be a future mate for Candy if I don't get some CCCs from the Candy/Splash eggs. Trouble will definitely have lots of MFC girls to make babies with in the very near future. I've got 6 more MFC girls on their way to the Bluff Country!

time to go make those scrambled eggs.

6 more? Wow! What will that bring your total to?

I hope Splash and Candy's eggs are alright. Did you check for fertility? There's a sticky post for that in the incubation section.

I'd be very interested in getting eggs from the Candy/Java/Trouble combo

You're unlikely to lose adults to Marek's. It almost always affects birds under one year old. Most usually at about point of lay or about 20 weeks but can be much earlier. For some reason pullets are affected a bit more often than copckerels. Many birds can be exposed but never show symptoms come down.
Birds which have been vaccinated can carry the field virus. The vaccination is usually made from Turkey Herpes virus which does affect chickens but is close enough that the antibodies produced against the Turkey Herpes virus protect against chicken Marek's. Thus if a vaccinated chicken has been in contact with chicken Marek's it can carry & shed the field virus thus possibly infecting unvaccinated birds.

So if I haven't had any chickens die (I haven't had any except predator) they most likely haven't been exposed and I could vaccinate the three I hatched on 08/21/09. The rest of my flock has all been vaccinated.

How would you know whether your birds had been exposed?
