Thanks so much for the encouragement!!!! As for consistency in down color....I've noticed (& please excuse the lack of correct genetic wording) that the chicks born with a wheaten base (who turn out to be cockerels), all have excessive black in their hackles. The boys born with the chipmunk looking down turn out to have the most "solid" MF pattern & coloring. The pullets born with the wheaten base are generally the best patterned but lack the black chevrons in the breast. I have much more success with the chipmunk pattern in my chicks. Just my observations:)

Hey all

Thanx for the nice words Maybe he will make some nice babies with that girl

Coopa
No his sire didnt have the black hacvkles This guy come from the first generation cross so he is the F2 His parents were the millie x partridge cross from the original crossing On that cross I changed roosters with the hens so I had 2 breeding pairs to work with From those I kept the best ones with the best color cause the type was the same in the roos Cause they were from a male line so the type held up And it still is Heres hoping it stays in the next generation

Erin
Yes I will take the chix back to dad and maybe the best roo back to mom and then reverse that order in the next generation Hoping that will set the type and also the color After that then they will be going to a millie x mottled cross that have very nice type so far Then hoping those chix will be fantastic Will put a pic of the mottled mom up on here when the time gives me permission to do so She is extremly nice

Thanx again for the encouragment everybody Gotta run again Have a 7 year olds birthday party to go to Maybe I will post again in 2 more months

I was going to wait until they get here, but here's (Nancy's) pics of the two roos coming this next week! The roo in the 1st pic is the sire to the cockerel in the 2nd pic.

I think you have a great prospect in roo #2. Love his color. How's his type?

I tell you what, Lynne ~ that first rooster has thrown some awesome chicks! He consistently produces much better than himself ~ and he's not bad at all! ;-) The only reason I'm letting him go is because I'll be using his son:

The wind was blowing Ice's tail feathers in this photo.

I have several younger cockerels (Ice is about 6 months) that look similar to Ice at their age.

COMPLETELY UNRELATED AND OFF TOPIC:

I am starting up a home-based business and added a new item to my list of offerings last night. I think it's really cute! If you'd like to take a peak, you can see it HERE. I might just try making a chicken next! ;-)

Thanx Lynne! You know it's always hard to judge from pics (especially fall pics when they're molting) - but he appeared to have the shortest back, which was one of my main considerations. And a nice wide breast. And in one of the side shots, his primaries and secondaries are all even lengths, with nice even mottling on all the tips. He's still just a cockerel from this spring, so has more filling out to do. He probably has the least favorable comb of all of them - I think he's the only one that didn't have a nice comb like his sire. But his sire in the first pic is throwing some great red hackles and tri-colored breasts on most all the cockerels, which is very promising.

If it's true that you get type from the female and color from the male, then I think I should do pretty well with either of them on Tango. And if they continue to breed red hackles and tri-colored breasts, then I'll be a happy camper!

All I know is that I tried 4 different roo/hen combinations last year, and none worked, so I knew my roos were wrong (for plumage). But who knows, maybe I sold some sleepers!!

Hi Nancy! We were posting at the same time!! You really should post that pic of Ice doing his turkey impression - I just loved it!! And yes - we definitely need some chicken soap! Can you speckle the soap and make it tri-colored?

I really like this one:

It doesn't show his type as well, but even when 'on alert', you can see that his cush is at eye level.

Mille Fleur Soap it shall be!
