Mille Cochin Info

MrsChickenDad - LOVE those frizzles! I have one frizzle cockerel who has been very busy with the girls, and his favorite girl is "Special", buff based pullet, and she's been laying long enough now her eggs are about adult hen sized. Eggs are in the 'bator now, I'm hoping for some nice frizzle Mille Cochin chicks

I'll be estatic if they look like yours!

Stephanie I think we all have have "extra" cockerels, I currently have 2 for sale too

Lindsey glad the black-band/was-blue-mark boy

is doing well now. (That is kind of a long name) I was browsing this weekend about probiotics - some list I'm on somewhere was talking about them - one breeder gives them before shipping as a boost to the bird's immune system and overall well-being. I think that's something I'm going to start doing, especially because we're so much colder then most everyone else up here in South Dakota, and shipping itself is hard on chicks, and going through a temperature change on top of it is just added stress; then when they get to their new home they're so much more susceptible to getting sick over something that wouldn't have distressed them before .. You know you worry when shipping the whole time the birds are in transit, every little bit we can do to make the trip better for them is only going to help.
I'm SO glad your Mille hen came home! So good to hear good news

& your Great Pyr is recovering well?

Kris that little Serama pullet is So pretty. I hope my pullet's breast flowers darken like that as she gets older... pattern is much the same, just not as distinct.

I know! They need names and I need to get number bands on them too. They are so spoiled. They are in the garage right now with a couple other cochin chicks about their age and a few serama pullets that were getting picked on out in the serama pen. I think they are enjoying being in the warm garage and not dealing with the wind and cold we have had. I want to make sure they are healthy before putting them out to contend with the weather we have been having!

Our pyr is recovering. She has four more weeks of cage rest (imagine 85 pound 8 month old pyr puppy in cramped wire kennel) and then she gets to have her first set of post op radiographs to assess her healing. After that she may be released for some leash walking! Right now she can only go out to go potty and right back in. She is going rather bananas. Our old pyr is almost nine and she is doing a good job but it is a lot for one dog to do on her own, especially an old lady. We have had some issues with something getting into a back pen and killing birds so the hotwire is back up and running and so far so good. I hate night time predators!

No way, I am never getting out of my Splash. So the MFC project has to go. Then all I will have is Splash and Butters Call Ducks. That's more than enough with everything else (non poultry) I have going on. I just need to sell these last 2 Roos. They are way to pretty to eat. :/
i ended up giving away my last 3 boys 2 weeks ago... been trying to sell them for months.
there comes a point where you'll save more money by giving them away than continuing to try to sell for next to nothing.

Here are today's photo's of Sunshine Roo. His type is really coming along. I'm very happy Nancy sold him to me!

So very handsome! Reminds me of the ones I still have and the one I am keeping!

I have had numerous calls, PMs and emails lately for MFC roos and hopefully wanting pullets but they will take roos. I don't have enough to go around. But always have more growing up!

Yeah, I have a hard time with extra boys too. I have given some away that just went on to be flock guardians for someones flock of mixed hens. I actually use "spare" cochin roos in with my layer flock because they don't "rough up" the girls and are very good little watch dogs! But you can only have so many roos too! I have justified selling birds for really cheap in the money I will save on not paying to feed them for the next year! It has not been a good year here for selling birds, our summer was so miserable that the whole market just froze because nobody wanted to pay for birds they might lose just to the heat and now it is almost winter and nobody is buying except really cheap. I have had better luck selling off spare hens that are slowing down in laying to hobby chicken farmers than anything else!

LOVE the pictures, Mike!

Kris these 2 are full brother / sister

Lindsey the older pullet is not related to Erin's birds, but the younger chicks are the same breeding as your boys

Thanks Re: my avatar, that's CC, my Buff Barred cockerel
Nancy, I think my birds are related to yours. Did you start with Tom's birds? If you did, then they are related.. or Jamie's. The Sunshine roo and that pullet look very similar to birds I've hatched.

Sunshine Roo and the pullet are both out of the pair that I bought from Amy. My younger chicks are out of that original pair plus the quad I bought from Twyla, who got Monet from you, so they are related to your birds.
