Mille Cochin Info

Quote: THAT is why every time I see her I love her! I am just amazed that she doesn't have a red throat but she may get it when she molts out in the spring. most all my girls have a red throat. I have 8 like her in with my handsome Xavier. I get some black chicks and some yellow chicks but I know for sure they will all be super type and give me plenty to work with to further my MFC breeding program.

Well. It finally happened.

I couldn't stay away! My first drop into the bucket was a red hen that I got as a broody. I fell in love with her. Now, I bought a bantam blue mottled, frizzled pullet for $5 at a show.

AND NOW.

I was given 3 Mille Fleur Cochin bantam cockerels to choose from. I believe I have chosen which bird I'm going to keep. He's got ALOT of white on him, but has the best tail, cushion, head and wings of the others. Anyway, being bred to the blue mottled frizzled pullet, according to the calculator, could give me more mottled and mille fleur colored birds. Is it possible for some of these to be frizzled as well?

I'm doing these as setters, so the colors are just fun for me!
So glad you are joining us on here! I no longer have Langshans but it is a small poultry world and we cross paths again!

If you cross your Frizzled with a smooth feathered bird you should get approximately 50% Frizzled birds. Sometimes I get 80% and sometimes I get 40% but I usually always get a really decent number of Frizzled. I run 2 pens of these in both combinations. Meaning I have a Frizzled roo in one pen over smooth hens and a smooth roo over Frizzled hens in another pen. I have the fun colors, too since I do not care to show Frizzles. Blue Mottled, blue splash, MF, buff Mottled etc are all in my pens. They are fun and so dag gone adorable I can hardly sell them! I love them all!

I think all my Mottled kids or the MFC dark kids go back to one of my original great conformation hens. She is a lovely girl and did well against competition this past weekend at the ABA show in Clemson SC, an hour's drive from my farm. I do have other bloodlines of Mottled Cochin but this hen helped introduce the type and pattern into my MFC breeding program.

ETA- Her son or grandson is in my avatar since she and her 2 daughters are in with my handsome Grant. I am hoping his pattern becomes more even like this hen so I can show him next year. I also have 2 pullets from the same hatch I am hoping to show. Time will tell.

Thank you! I'm so excited to have these. I can't keep a Silkie alive to save my soul and the Cochins are SO reliable when they go broody. Love them! So, why not have a small flock of "random" birds right?

That's exciting about the frizzles! I've never liked them before, but after seeing her, I just HAD to have her! She's grown so much since I got her. Almost time for her to start laying and breeding! The cockerel is definitely ready to start breeding. I think he needs more time though...

You never know! You may need a Langshan or two! ;)

I miss my Langshans but I have cut back on breeds and the LF have been the ones to go. I can eat small eggs when I have extras and still enjoy my hobby.
