Millions of mites

I have an EE that is in quarantine for an eye problem and while checking her out yesterday found out she was infested with mites. We had been using DE throughout the yard for fly control and few other pest but guess we missed the wood box and old herb garden which is now my new broody/hospital box and attached mini run. None of the other chickens have bugs so we are pretty sure they came from there. Rubbed Sevin all over her and rechecked her in the evening and all the mites were gone from her so now we just have to redust in 7-10 days and I think this will be all cleared up.

I'm glad you practiced biosecurity....quarantining them for 30 days, it paid off for you, I'm a firm believer in quaranting and this incident should be a lesson learned for others. I dont see any reason why you couldnt put them in a large cardboard box with a piece of wire on top of it. Sevin dust will take care of the mites on your hens. Liquid sevin in a sprayer could take care of your basement. Retreat everything including your chickens in 10 days. As far as the ivermectin/praziquantel; I think you wouldve been better off with ivermectin pour on or eprinex pour on to deter the mites. However, the way you described "millions" of them crawling around and on your chickens, I believe your chickens were most likely overwhelmed and no amount of ivermectin wouldve killed the mites. I always have sevin dust on hand...it's $10 for the large canister at walmart. One thing I suggest you do is once you've gotten rid of the mites, I recommend you give the chickens plain yogurt or buttermilk (probiotics) with scrambled eggs or canned beef catfood (extra protein) mixed in their feed. I'm guessing the mites sucked alot of blood and could possibly make your chickens anemic. Giving them the probiotics and extra protein will rebuild their immune systems and strength.

Used almost a whole can of Sevin dust on the babies and in the basement. Burned most of the box brooder and set a new one up (with lots of dust). Will burn the rest tomorrow then vacuum down there.

we had a bad out break just a week ago, I couldn't find the mites on the chickens but found them on me uck! I had been using DE forever and thought that would take care of any problem, wrong! So I went and bought sevin concetrate and mixed with water sprayed down chickens and ducks houses the used ivermectin pour on all birds. so far so good, but I will do it again in 2 weeks to get the eggs that hatch. Hope you get rid of your problem. This is the first time for me maybe the hot dry summer could be to blame?

can someone please post a picture of what the can of seven looks like? I found some in teh hardware store but unsure if its what you guys are talking about??

OP best of luck to you and hope those nasty suckers are gone soon!!!

They were in my basement which is kind of cool and damp, so not sure about the weather affecting it. I saw more mites on the cardboard than I did on the birds. There were so many it looked like (crawling) sawdust on the box and on the floor around it. It really was horrifying. My boyfriend thought I was exaggerating until he came over and saw it for himself. It was a hatch out of a horror movie.

I appreciate all the support, hopefully I can kick this thing.

The eradication protocol requires that you retreat until the bugs are gone upon re inspection at 7 to 10 day intervals, it isn't treat once and again at 7 to 10 days.

In other words two treatments may not get the job done.

You need to check a rather large area, namely every place the birds have been and this includes where any other bird that has contact with the infested bird has been.

Never assume it is just the one bird, the other birds may have picked up shed eggs after you have looked at them.
