Just wondering if a Min. Donkey or full sized donkey would make any kind of noise if someone tried to come in to our yard at night? Someone jumped our fence and went through our cars and garage last night. Must have been teens, stole GPS, cell phone, coins, and beer from the garage fridge. Our dogs were sound a sleep in our house and did not hear a thing.

Donkeys are great against predators. They actually physically defend. I bet they'd make a racket if a human disturbed them. If you have aproblem with stray kids, though, they might hurt a mini.

I have a mini donk that raises all kinds of ruckus when someone is in the yard. He's also terribly protective of his 'mares' who are full sized (and drafts). He thinned out the neighbors half-feral herd of pom dogs, and chases deer out of his pasture as well. You can count on him for 4am braying as well. Half the neighbors love him, half hate him... but thankfully most aren't close.

I really just think it depends on the individual. Tucker is the only boy on the property, so he feels he has to be the man I suppose.

My husband is on the way to Home Depot to get motion detectors and flood lights. I would like to get a donkey, so I was hoping that someone would say that they make good alarms, that way my husband might go for it. I have to add animals gradually, so far 3 pot bellied pigs, 24 chickens, 2 ducks, 6 dogs, 3 cats, and 2 goats that will be ready in a few weeks.

My guys honk whenever they see someone... We are so used to it though, we don't even notice any more. They are good guard animals, and will sound the alarm if some one disturbs them, plus they will protect your other critters (horses, alpacas, goats, minis - that's who my guys are in with, and I know a strange dog would not fair too well if caught in the pen). I love my donkeys and will never be with out at least 2... They are very playful also!

I do not have any horses. If I were to get a donkey for protection, would it be ok just to have one? I know that they are pack animals. Would it be OK to live with the pigs and goats?

He would be much happier with a second donkey. He might be okay with a goat, but they really do much better with an equine buddy.

And mine do chase off four legged predators. But they sound the alarm about everything. A leaf blowing? Time to holler.

My back pasture has 3 mini-donks, 10 african geese, and 30 guineas. It is looooooooooud.

So I would have to get two donkeys? Do not think my husband would go for that, darn. I was hoping that one donkey would be ok with the goats.

Have you considered geese? My 2 get quite loud whenever anyone comes through the gate if they're close enough to hear. Would definately be cheaper and easier upkeep!
