This morning we got up early and prepared to head back to the homestead. Because the Freedom Rangers spend the night in the mobile minivan coop I just offered them food and water while we were packing up the other vehicles and then took away the water, closed the hatch and away we went.
We decided to keep two of the pullets. I had considered doing that before all the drama regarding the Waldo Canyon Fire, but our choice of which to keep was altered by the experience. We kept this one:

Who I've named "Smoke" because her back end looks like it has been covered in smoke. I was planning on keeping one of the pretty golden ones and naming her "Flame", but my daughter picked this one (warning, poor quality photo):

Because, in her words "it looks like her head caught on fire". We've named her "Toast" so we can now point at her and declare "Wow, that one's Toast". I was tempted to snag the cute little rooster you saw playing in the dirt a few posts back and name him "Waldo" but that would have pushed even my most patient of husbands past the line, so I installed them all in the ranch of a very nice lady who said that as long as I provided them with food, they'd care for them as long as I needed. This is probably just as well, since I was starting to tell them apart and was one step away from naming them. Not a good idea if you plan on serving them for dinner some day.
The property is a mess, but still standing. Husband and daughter have collected the dogs and will spend the night there. Self, middle child, cat and 10 chickens are at sister-in-laws and eldest son is still helping girlfriend move. I think middle child and I can return home with cat, the layers and our two rescued pullets, but we have a lot of work to do in the weeks ahead, not to mention a major cleaning of my sister-in-law's garage.
Minivan coop is parked at the ranch awaiting our next move. It has more than fulfilled my expectations.
