Well, not even one day into vacation and we get a call that all but one of our chickens are dead. We were told by the person tending them that he saw a mink dragging one into the woods and the rest were already dead. He was able to save the last one. Any ideas on effective ways to get rid of this problem? It will have to be pet friendly as I have dogs and a cat that run around the yard.

Sorry for your loss. Where were your birds when this happened - cooped or free ranging? If cooped I guess the obvious solution would be to somehow make it more secure. Also, when you said pet friendly, how about a live trap? Won't hurt your cat in case it wanders into it. Best of luck to you.

So sorry to hear about your loss. A live trap is an excellent idea. Hope you catch the mink!

That's what I figured. I have two out there now and haven't had any hits. We got more chicks from the local chicken swap and have not lost one. Of course, my dog is home and doing his normal thing as well. As far as the coop or range, they were ranging as they did quite often. They liked to get out of the pen which is six feet high and 150 sq feet. The new ones seem to stay in.
