Minnesota!

A pit or a bunker style. In the 80s folks started converting to the bunkers, probably because they got tired of pitching out with a fork when the unloader pooped out on them. There is more spoilage though if not properly covered, and if air pockets are left, then anaerobic decomposition starts and that is not good, creates mold and can be bad. With a cylinder, upright silo, it packed down very well as it is shot up into the silo, so no worry for air pockets. I would rather have the silo, myself, though if I had to do it again, it would kill me climbing those 50-60-footers. My legs could handle it when I was a kid, but not now.
10-4 on that. I can't imagine climbing them again day after day!

Did we call 3/1 early on? If so, who can complain about 75% layers?! They look fantastic! I hope they give up the eggs soon!

So are you confirming #2 is a roo?? I've been suspicious of that one since day 1! He's not showing any signs of crowing or or doing "rooster things" yet. My husband won't be too happy, he doesn't like the idea of the noise, but I'm secretly looking forward to having a rooster around

Hopefully he's a good one!

Any of you guys ever do the whole rennaissance festival in Shakopee? The Gf and I are half planning a trip down there.

I go every year! I love to people watch there more then the State Fair. Also that is time to start Christmas shopping. I use to take the dogs with, but they are getting too old & my Bandit boy doesn't like sudden loud noises. Plan for lots of dust & dirt & lots of walking.

Actually, at 16-weeks and not much for a comb, you may have hit the jackpot! I forgot that one was an EE and not a pure Ameraucana. You are one lucky one of they are all pullets!

well today was a good and bad day as far as the coop goes.. i got all the framing done on the run...and so i thought i would start to fence it in... i stood up a big roll of galvanized wire heavy duty i think its 6x50 anyways i thought it would stand..guess not.. whack right in the face gave myself a black eye, bruised cheek bone and bloody puffed lip...wasnt loving my chickens for a little while...LOl
The coop is looking great, but too bad on injury. That had to hurt!

Our Accountant had it sort of set up every year and would ask us about deductions and stuff. My husband has a real estate license also with his bank job. The real estate background compliments his job and that knowledge helps and once in a great while he does a sale. I think that was the issue. He had not a done a sale in the last 5 years or so and he was still claiming miles on the truck for running to different properties which he does for the bank a lot actually when a loan is going bad...etc. Well no. There was an IRS office out of Brainerd that snagged us.

The guy was a jerk. We saved receipts for donations to our goodwill and they totally said we couldn't use those. It was a complete hose job.

The money is gone. It's done and over with. Hopefully going to a veteran and his/her family. And not buying tattoos, fake fingernails, iphones or ER visits for the common cold.

Tonight I tucked everybody in and checked Lucy's bumble foot.(toe) The area I worked on previously didn't look too bad. But on the interior aspect of the same toe was another Bumble opening and I grabbed her off the roost and brought her up. I had never had a bumble area come out like a kernel of corn --like they say-- but I did tonight. The core was probably the size of two kernels of corn. Slightly smelly. Veterycin spray. Bacitracin. Non stick gauze and vet wrap. I then rubbed her legs down and pads of her feet with that Vet RX I just got. I think she's getting ready to molt as her feathers look like they've done the bleaching that Minnie mentioned today. which means her immunity is going to be run down too. I'll redress on Friday. And then we head out of town for the Labor day weekend. I wish almost that I could keep at her through the weekend. Will get back in I suppose on Monday and do another cleaning. Poor girl. The swelling is a good nickel size in circumfrance around the toe. I'm just a little worried about that toe with cold weather approaching and compromised circulation there I'm sure. Any body had bumble toes freeze off? I don't want to go through that business.
Audits bite. Fed is better then State. Our main store was audited by the State & they owed us, the next year they audited our other store & claimed we owed them on legitimate deductions so we fought it & won. This was during the recession so we know they were trying to find money to continue the funny accounting they practice. How the State figures Sales Tax in the budget would be considered creative accounting. Both times they sent a guy that didn't even understand English or deductions. I have a feeling he worked on commission.

Haha.. My 35 year is coming up.
My 30th was a couple years back; I've never gone & don't even know if there is a reunion. Hubby goes to his but he missed his 40th. My son had graduating class of 24, so they just get together whenever, I think he's pretty close to 15yrs.

That is a good question ralphie. Some people think I am heartless because I view an animals life much differently than a humans. For example, my sister and brother in law have a rescue pit bull that has bit my mom, wife, stepdad, and a few others. They just had their first child two weeks ago. They still think that dog is fine and not going to be a problem. I on the other hand, would have shot that dog after the first sign of aggression and the thought of them letting an infant lay on the floor with that animal around is very irresponsible. So when I am about to kill a chicken? All I'm thinking about is dinner.
Wow, If you're going to take a rescue, you need to plan for behavioral issues & deal with them. Dogs need structure & clear rules and Pittys NEED lots of exercise. That's too bad because they are dooming that dog to an unhappy life at best, more likely, being destroyed. I've been dealing with that with my daughter's lab/pit. They haven't spent the time training or caring for him & he is spooky. He's great with the kids but as they get older, he will be less tolerant. He also has a hip/leg issue that they don't have the money to deal with so I know he hurts at times. I feel bad for him, but I'm not going to train or vet him; he's not my dog ( and he's about as smart as a lug nut).

Well it's time for the 16-week-old pics!

Welsummer

Feather-legged EE. I still wonder about the gender of this one. Only thing that makes me wonder are the curved tail feathers.

Clean-legged EE. She's my little buddy

Buckeye
They are so sweet! They are just like the one I got from Minnie. Mine have been wonderful. My Welsummer was the broody that hatched 7 chicks this year.

Should have done them about 3-4 weeks ago. I wanted to do a fall crop of a few things, but ran out of time. Oh, and it decided to rain like crazy too that week I was going to attempt it. The best carrots we ever grew though were harvested from under about 4" of snow just before Thanksgiving. I just don't know if there is enough grow time left. However, you could run a hoop tunnel over them and extend your season.
I keep wanting to do that, but of course, I don't have time : ( Also, growing root veggies in a raised bed of 6" or so produces the best ones.
You're right about being the best carrots. I tried that last year & during the Dec thaw I dug up the carrots that were left & the grandson ate them all in the course of a week!

If you need a roo....

If I want a new coop this year, I'm going to have to hire it out.

We got the surgery schedule today & DH might be back in his chair by Christmas. I'm officially not doing Thanksgiving this year. He thinks we should hire it out, I suggested that we sell some of the juvies. I just can't justify the bid he got.

Finally I got the multi quote thing down. I helps when I stop & read the directions.

Rhett I think I know where that parcel is. If it is the one I think it is, there is some creative writing in the ad. It is south and east of me 15-20 miles. I would not pay that for that piece, but I am cheap and I find 6% interest to be a tad high in these times of 3-4% interest. When I read pond in that area I think mosquito hatchery.

My outdoor thermometer is reading 69 degrees and 2% humidity. Is it even possible to get that low?

I am thinking the batteries must be getting low.

ralphie, I'd just change the batteries .

At 4:30 am this morning, I took poor seaquist, who has gone broody for the zillionth time this summer, out of the coop in the dark. Put her in the broody run which has a big dusting area under a roof, and a weedy area of the run - like a giant giant kennel on the ground with hardware cloth roof and walls.

She was freaked because it was dark,.....but I couldn't leave her broody in the hot coop all day. Felt bad, she was too scared even to settle down and roost on the ground. Put her in a sandy area in the middle, but.

So it is almost 7 am, its light out and I'm sure she is happy as a clam. This is the run behind the tiny coop - now known as the broody run.

And the white pullet is seaquist at about 4 or 5 months

An earlier juvie pic of her

She has a grown up comb, but still looks pretty much the same. She is small, like a seagull or pigeon.

Any ideas on what the heck she is? She is from that bunch of chicks that were hatched by someone on byc who trades unusual breeds hatching eggs....and got totally mixed up with what chick was what.

I think I figured it out. you were right about part of it, I'd say half seagull and the other half chicken.
