Minnesota!

Thanks.
She informed us we are not even allowed to have hens. I had no idea of that when I got chickens 3 yrs ago. So she is threateneing if we don't get rid of him she'll turn us in. We live in the country on 7 acres but lakeshore so that makes it illegal here. She can make noise, and she lives in the city only here wekends and holidays.... it really sucks. No one else has complained only her.
Have you double checked to see that that is true? Is there a set-back to keep them. 7-acres is a pretty good sized lot and I would look into the validity of her complaint before getting rid of my bird or birds.

They would have to be 1000 feet from shore, our 7 acres are three lots- 2 side by side lake lots and 4 acre field on the back side. Doesn't go back 1000 ft. not even close.
Seems like such a crazy law when there are a lot of water birds on the lake... it's a small lake more like enviromental not recreational. If it was just the hens I might? be able to get a variance but not with the rooster so until I find a home for him I don't want to try checking into it.

That's sad. I hate all of these rules people create for each other. I really wonder what this world is coming to.

That rule is probably established by the department of natural resources. It is to stop contaminated water run-off into the lakes and rivers from livestock feed lots and pastures. The run-off causes all sorts of problems including a massive algae bloom and extra growth in weeds which can choke the life out of bodies of water.

I would check with the natural resources department and see if that it the case. you could possibly get a variance or waiver for a small amount of chickens.
Worth a try.....they can only say yes or no.

Erlibird this maybe picking bones here but, if you are in Pine River area or Cass County, I'm not sure if they are that specific for just a few birds or small amount of AU's -- agricultural units. Here is a PDF on feedlots which addresses the lakeshore setbacks for prescribed number of Ag units. 1 chicken counts as .01 AU's. IDK. I'm not sure all your chickens add up to be a" manure run off burden" to the lake. http://www.co.cass.mn.us/esd/pdfs/ordinance/FEEDLOT.pdf I understand not wanting to get into the gory details and get in a pee match with this part-timer at the lake but I think you have something to stand on here....
