Minnesota!

I know, it makes me sad everytime. I have an ee (Jezebel) going on 6 or 7 years, and I dread her passing even though she has had a pretty darn good life.

Funny thing, Jezebel who doesn't really tolerate anyone, has cozied up to Ralphie's rooster, at least at roosting time. I really have to name him, I like finnegan but that is the boy name my daughter chose for her baby if it was a boy....so it is off limits.

Just look at the resident directory at your local nursing home. You are bound to find a great old man name for him! Most of our hens are named after past residents of my wife's nursing home

Sigh.

Yeah, that musta hurt. Am glad she didn't get you square in the eye.

Louie, ouch, that does look like it hurt!

Klopklop,  maybe I missed it, but what do you think is going on with your hen?  If she was laying on her side , I would be wary of leaving her in the coop during the day without supervision unless you have her cordoned off somehow.  Sometimes chickens will attack even their best loved flockmates if the chicken is ill.
That is why very ill chickens will "perk" up in the presence of other chickens, and will act as normally as they can.  I've seen my own sick hens even fake peck at the ground, and fake eat to mimic the actions of a healthy chicken when I've had them out for a bit of outdoor time.

This morning Goldie was interested in venturing outside her kennel.  She came out, ate  a bunch of mealworms, looked around, flew up to the top of the wire kennel door and teetered.  I retrieved her and set her on the floor, she flew up to the edge of the bathtub.  I had the chance to touch the skin near her wounds, and it is normal temp, not hot - I've been watching for infection.

Good to know her wings work!  They hang off her body in a strange way, and one is definitely kind of drooping off her shoulder, so she looks strange when she is just standing.  I'll try to take a pic tonight.

Tried to interest her in raw egg, even forced her beak into it but she just sipped what was on her beak and wouldn't have any of it. Had to go to work so put her back in the kennel.  So today she will probably have apple and mealworms.  I left mealworms in a feeding dish that has a big rolled edge on it so if the worms crawl up they should fall back in.  I do not want mealworms wandering around the bathroom.

1. Good to hear that Goldie is perking up. You are doing such a great job with her!

2. Crawling mealworms? The ones I buy are dead, I hope.

I'm exploring the electric fence route to contain Rosie. I can't put my parents through rescuing her again.

Has anyone ever used one? Any recommendations? It needs to cover a very large area.

Well I seen my hawk today looked it up it is a red tailed hawk. It is a big one it looks to be about 2 1/2 feet tall. It was sitting in the tree right above the chicken coop. I tried scaring it away by yelling at it and flapping my arms that did no good so I picked up a rock and threw it at it, it finally flew away. But it only flew to the neighbors top of the garage so I threw another rock at it. And it just flew to another tree. That dang bird would NOT go away.. So my hens are on permanent lockdown and my dogs are not allowed to go outside without supervision which makes it inconvenient..

Bummer, he's back for seconds.

Are you in an urban setting?

Hi Everybody!
MinnesotaNice, the chicks are doing great, went out to check on them this morning and they were all running to the door to be pet. How are the hens? After I traded with you I went to the feed store to get some grower feed and got bit by an Irish Wolfhound. He didn't puncture anything badly but I have a g on my wrist. Mom made me go to the doc and nothing is broken but I have some nerve and tendon damagee and won't be use that hand for much for awhile. He just had to bite my dominant arm

. I'm thinking of raising some of my own chicken feed and read somewhere on here about raising guppies, minnows, and duckweed as a supplement for chickens. Anyone else heard of or did it? I was also thinking about aquatic snails and crickets.

. I would have never thought of using guppies but as fast as they multiply I would think that would make for a good little treat.. Good idea ...
