Minnesota!

I have a question. Since I crossed a fast feathering Australorp roo over a slow feathering cochin the chick could be feather sexed right? Its definetly a splash since there are black and white feathers shafts on the blue chick. And its shafts are long too

If you are asking me, I don't know what you should expect. I only know what breeds I have and which I can feather sex and which I cannot. Sorry.

Oh thats ok! I was asking to see if anybody knew if I could feather sex that cross

I can feather sex Buckeyes and Cochins, but not the New Hampshires (they feather all the same). Silkies I can't sex until they are about 4-months old. Crosses are random, depending on what goes into them. I never figured out the feather sexing when I had a lot more breeds, so I can't say what the others did. Minorcas all grew the same too, had to wait for the combs to show the difference, and with those it was pretty early on.

go home last night, counted heads, and the buff orp was missing. Finally found her wedged into a shelf, in between garden pots and chick supplies. Only her head was sticking out. Poor baby, I guess she had enough strenght to make it up onto a haybale but couldn't make it to the top shelf where everyone roosts.

there is no way a chicken would deliberatey aim for that shelf since I keep it packed to the gills to prevent roosting on it. I picture her aiming for the top shelf and flapping wings scrabbling to get up and falling on to the shelf below. Thankfully, nothing sharp to injure her.

Had coffee on the screened porch this morning, sandhill cranes calling this morning. And, got to watch a barred owl fly across the field and land in a tree on the edge of the woods.

Enjoy the day everyone!

Back in town and first order of the day is cleaning the coop :-).

Am feeling surrounded by hawks. Our roosters are agitated and the occasional screech comes from the skies.

I was foolish yet again. Momma hen and chick were doing great. This morning during chores I had the thought that I should switch back to the regular waterer (been using a bucket during the winter) because I thought the chick might be able to jump into the bucket soon. Found the chick drowned in the bucket this afternoon. I'm really sad.

The momma hen did quit setting on the eggs yesterday so in a desperate attempt to hatch them I made an incubater... Put a heating pad in a crock pot and put a little water on a clotg in there and shined a light on it. Temperature has remained steady around 99 degrees with humidity at 70 percent. Nothing has happened and no eggs have hatched. I really don't expect any to but it took 10 minutes to set up.

I've learned a lot and will do better next time around.
