Minnesota!

I just put 7 Runner duck eggs under my broody BLRW. I chickened out

and brought her into the basement. I know it's supposed to warm up tomorrow, but I thought just in case she decides to get unbroody, then at least the eggs won't freeze today and then I can throw them into the incubator.

She is joining an ever increasing group of "basement dwellers"- including my Crele Polish pair (She is cranking out 6 eggs a week, all are going in the bator), 10 baby Silkies of assorted ages ( Thanksgiving hatch, Christmas hatch, New Years hatch.....) and 2 Bantam BL Polish boys who didn't look like they were going to make it out in the barn.

My barn is uninsulated, but not drafty. Even my little Showgirls are doing great. They have all slowed down laying this past week, though. I expect they'll pick up again this coming week as it warms up. Had another one go broody this morning, a Blue Orp. now I have 1 Maran incubating air in the barn, my BLRW in the basement, and now this Orp.

Does anyone have any Marans here? Or Ameracaunas? I only have 2 Ameracauna pullets, and 3 Marans. My best Marans Roo does not have dark shanks. I would love to buy/trade for some local eggs. The Marans are FBC and the A.'s are Wheaten/Blue Wheaten. I am incubating all their eggs right now.

I am going to bring my cabnet bator in the house this week-end and fire it up, as my Brinsea is going to fill up fast now.

Well, that's the news from Braham.

Speaking of the cold weather and eggs .... I've been wondering how long a newly laid egg can stay in an unheated coop nesting box when it's 10 to 20 below? Won't it freeze solid in about 20 minutes?

Ha Ha ! IDK, mine are always frozen by the time I get home from work to collect them. Except the one that are under broodies. I am planning on buying some soil heating cables to put under the nests for next winter. i did notice that once it gets up into the 20's, the eggs aren't frozen when I get home.

I called the extension office yesterday....wanted to find out what the regualtions were as far as selling chickens and eggs at the farmers market and what not. If anyone needs this information please send me your email address and I can forward it on. They also sent me a bunch of other really good links to information.

Are you able to do anything with the frozen eggs, or do you have to throw them away?

I let mine thaw out, cook them up, and feed them right back to the chickens.
